I’ve read that fowl pox is uncommon on Long Island but I’m concerned about these black lesions. My blsck Australorp has some white puss in addition to black lesions on her face and comb which is consistent with fowl pox. My barred rock has quite a few black lesions on her comb As well, and my red star has some too now indicating it is spreading. Could these be stick tight fleas or fowl pox? I dont want to try to pull them off in case they’re scabs from fowl pox. 2 weeks ago I had a 4th chicken extremely lethargic with no scabs or symptoms which I assumed was a respiratory infection and treated with antibiotics and she is fine now, but I’m now wondering if she had fowl pox. Suggestions and advice please!!

Agreed with other posters.. it's neither pox not stick tight fleas.. just a little scabbing from pecking order or getting scratched on a branch type stuff. Most healing wound on chickens get the dry white looking skin around the healing wounds.

Many if not most respiratory infections.. INCLUDING Pox.. are viral and antibiotic are irrelevant and coincidental healing at best.. The body makes it's own anti bodies.. and bacteria and virus battle each other.. antibiotics kill both beneficial and harmful bacteria indiscriminately.. which BTW.. is what's keeping you alive, literally.. for informational purposes.

Lovely flock, hope you're enjoying BYC! :frow

Thank you all for your input, I really appreciate it. I'm glad to hear that this is nothing serious and that I can save a $100+ trip to the vet! :)
