just wondering if foxes announce a kill ?
I had one out back of my yard making a terribly loud screeching call for 1/2 hour or so .
Also my neighbors hen is MIA
Plan on looking for feathers first light
My hens are locked in the coop. But my neighbors aren’t.

Coyotes have just started to get noticed in southern Maryland where I’m at .
I encountered one turkey hunting 3 years ago but they are not real common. The thought crossed my mind though . Has anybody ever used snare traps for coyote

My hens are secure ..

I've never experienced that, fox are usually very quiet and cautious....a coyote will call to others to share a kill, but foxes don't....a mother will faintly yelp to young ones to cone to her, but not howl for an extended period like that....sure it is a fox and not a coyote?

Well I googled it lol and low and behold a boy I know killed a coyote 4 years ago around the corner from my house .
This is a game changer !

I've never used snares, but I do use a 30/30...if it is a coyote, they usually aren't by theirsef there are others with it....that is why they howl to communicate. My birds are locked up at night too, but I've seen them out during the day....morning and afternoons, so keep an eye out and some lead handy.

What time of day was this? Fox definitely make several different eery calls, but I have only heard them at dusk & in the middle of the night. They make my skin crawl. Search the web for vixen calls & others. They are really creepy. One of the calls sounds like the scream of a rabbit getting killed. They should not announce a kill but they do vocalize.

I have heard fox vocalize during breeding season (think rusty hinge screech) and coarse, harsh almost barking sounds in late summer as the young start dispersing.

@Rick Chi, deer hunter on my property shot a massive female coyote last fall. She was slightly mangy so not in top physical condition but still weighed 53 pounds. Would have loved to see a DNA test run on her.
