Anywhere with chickens
My Coop

I had a fox attack two weeks ago. It scratched one hen on the back ( she’s doing better ). We also had a hen with some nerve damage and she’s recovering . But today it came back and took a hen. I am sick of it hurting my chickens and I want it gone. I can’t legally kill it, what should I do?

what should I do?
Fully enclosed runs work well. Predator load is one of the main reasons for using them. While most of us prefer free ranging, when it's life or death.. I choose lock down until the threat passes, reasonably.. and realizes there's no dinner here and moves on. I can't kill them all, there's always more.

Baited and properly placed Electric fence can be quite effective at keeping ground predators out of larger pastured areas, as long as the hens stay within.

Sorry for your loss. :hugs

Hope your survivor continues to recover and thrive! :fl

Thanks we have a run but 14 chickens so it gets pretty crowded.

So sorry for your loss. Foxes are the worst. They keep coming back as long as they think they have a shot at a chicken dinner. It's a shame you can't put it down. The electric fence idea from EggSighted4Life sounds promising. Maybe try calling fish and wildlife and ask for recommendations. In my area I was told I could kill the fox that was eating my meat birds. Some area make exception for livestock.

Thank you. I almost up and short it but there is a fine for it. I am really appreciate all the help

Contact your local wildlife office. They may be willing to trap. Here in Georgia, they won’t trap due to rabies but they will give us a permit to kill foxes. Maybe your wildlife guys will do the same. If not, ask them if there are any trappers in the area that have trapping permits that allows them to take foxes for the fur.

If its illegal to kill it, there's a reason why its being protected, so all those suggesting Sx3 are not being helpful.
Besides, one fox gone, another predator will come and take its place. There has to be a level of respect for the surrounding nature.
its our responsibility to keep that balance and protect our animals. All you can really do is deter and predator proof.
If your run is a little small, can you expand it?
