I honestly don't like the thought of killing animals either, but the other day when I saw a fox (as I was in my vehicle pulling out of my driveway) grabbing one of MY cockerels (that are on their way to the sunny side of the mountain anyways) by the tail feathers, my possessive instincts completely took over and I just *wished* that I had a gun at hand. Because those are my birds, and I don't care if that fox is hungry or whatever else. No animal has any rights on my property, except My animals.
Despite my calm protests, my boyfriend shoots anything in the yard, racoons, skunks, squirrels, bobcats, coyotes... he has always left the foxes alone for some reason, and of course the deer for obvious reasons. There will be no mercy from me for a savage fox who wants my birds for dinner. And I will no longer calmly plead for the poor things lives. And if he won't do it then I guess I'll have to.
I'm so glad I'm not in your situation. I have some neighbors who don't like roosters but that's the worst of it, and they seem to be warming up a bit...
