Freaking out over chicken noise - Help!

According to your posts you have the right to have chickens and they are within the recommended space requirments needed by your local ordinace. You do not have to get rid of your chickens. I understand that you are worried about your neighboors, but we (BYC) are worried about you.

Great points. I don't think people realize that when they complain about "chicken noise" it's so discriminatory. I also have a negative HOA and work the graveyard shift so am sympathetic to all those other noises. I was fortunate to find a nearby pasture to keep my 4 hens at in return for keeping it mowed.

If you build a wooden dog house,& line it with rigid insulation. The stuff that cones in either a blue or pink sheet. Then hang a rag cut into strips over the door. It will really deaden the sound. I had a rooster that wood crow at 4:30 am. My wife didn't appreciate it.

Our Americauna pullet gets noisy near egg-laying time so her bawking is a moving target. Mabel would bawk to announce her egg and then progeessively more and more after. We would run out and tell her to shut up and give her some scratch or treats to break things up. But soon she started bawking for the reward. What appears to work is a gentle squirt of the hose. Now, when she starts getting bawky, we come out and cool her off a bit (just a little bit). It has largely solved our noise problem. She's still nice to me so I don't see any permanent psychological damage.

I know what you mean... I've had chickens for over a year now. I can't honestly say I know how much noise they make during the day because I do the underwear sprint on the weekends when I'm home as well. I realize that 5 days out of the week, I'm not there to stop them but for some reason I feel compelled to do so on the weekends. I can't really explain it.

Its funny, my key west hens never make any noise when they are laying. Most all the other kinds of chickens I have do but the KW hens don't. They lay a small white egg just about every single day. They lay as well as my leghorns and sexlinks.

I have read 8 pages and I'm really steamed! How dare people complain about something so...wholesome as CHICKENS! In our neighborhood people are up bright and early with leaf blowers, dogs barking, car alarms, loud children...and someone always has something they need to hammer on. This is the cost of living in an urban setting. My town is pretty open to chicken keeping though, and very tolerant of all the other noises too, apparently.
I hate that you have ended up needing to sell your chickens. It really makes me so sad...would people expect others to give up their dogs so easily? NEVER! I don't feel like you should have to give them up to please one neighbor. If that is the case I'm going to insist my neighbor to give up their leaf blowing habits. You can find a nice home for your chickens and maybe some day live in a place where you can have as many loud chickens as you want.
I'm so sorry for your trouble
