No idea if this thing has gotten national publicity, so I thought I'd post it here. It's made several rounds on local radio and television, and you can google "Bluebird Hill Farm" to find an endless amount of information. Anyway..

It's basically a free farm. Currently USDA organic - I think they do lavender mostly. Comes with a working farm, house, barn, chickens, cat, etc. I'm not affiliated, endorsing, andI haven't entered, and won't (in the process of buying more acreage, my family landed in Virginia around the time of colonization and plan on remaining a Virginian, I hate NC ;) , etc), but it's at least a chance for someone to get land that potentially wouldn't a plot to work.

I'd search bluebird hill farm for other general info..

Wow, that's pretty neat. I'm no East Coast person though. Happy as can be in the Rocky Mountains and don't plan to leave. But, for someone looking to get started... what an opportunity!

I am a few hours west of this area. It all sounds great except for the $300 application fee you have to submit along with your 200 page essay for each person in the "couple" that applies for the contest. I have no problem with the essay, it's the $300 that makes me stop and wonder if its for real or a scam of some sort. But hey, I am always the pessimist when someone says they are going to give you something of great value for free!

I read someone "gave" away a bed and breakfast in NY I believe. Someone gets a great deal. The person "giving away" the property gets a great deal. Everyone else gets boned. It's kind of like a lotto or a raffle except the claim there is skill involved since you have to write an essay.
