free range quail

Come down off the ledge man. The chances of a game warden wandering onto your farm and givin' you any crap over that Bob are the same as winning the lottery and gettin' struck by lightning on the same day. If it ever were to happen, you just have to tell him that the darn critter just showed up one day and never left. If the warden is a real hardass, the most he could do is slap the cuffs on the quail for trespassin'.

We have some Eastern Wild Turkeys we raised- and about 100 acres, so we let them out in the day, and they would come back to the pen at night. After a few weeks, they realized they didn't have to sleep in the pen, they could roost in the trees around the pen. A few weeks later, I would see them walking through the corn field a quarter mile from our farm. I know they were ours because when I got out of the truck, they ran to me. Now, as best as i can tell, they hung around because 1) they were imprinted, and 2) they knew where to get food. After about 4 months of the turkeys running around, we had the Game Warden give us a call. The turkeys were walking around in the sub-divison near our house. Normally, you would foresee that being an issue, except the birds were doing the same thing in the sub-divion that they did in our house, walk into the garage and eat all the cat and dog food. If you have ever had 15 turkeys in your garage for more than 5 minutes, you can imagine what the floor looks like.
We didn't get fined, but we had to get rid of them. I wont say as to whether or not we have more now, but in my opinion, unless free ranging quail are in your neighbors garage eating all their dog and cat food, I'm will to bet your safe!

Let the bob roam. no way in hell will you get in trouble for it................people free range birds all the time..mostly chicken, and i raised and released 100s of bobs, yes maybe only 20% make it. Heck i don't even care if the bird of prey take a few of my birds.......I love to see these grand birds as much as the wild quail and pheasants

Like deerman said, its worth the money just to see them, even if its at a high loss rate. The state used to release bids on our farm- The cats would find them, and bring them back alive, setting them on the back porch. Im more interested in hearing what kind of luck people have releasing birds with minimal human imprinting. One of my friends that I met while attending OSU told me that according to the study he did for OSU tracking pen raised and wild birds- only abut 3% of the pen raised birds make it past a year, so thats about 500-800 birds to get one established covey? Anyone out there releasing birds seen anything different?

Yes even wild bobwhite , most don't make it to a year, think that where i got the 20% that make it. Now that here in Ohio, winter real hard on them.

The state trapped and raised some wild bobs , without human contact. to released. That was the best results.

Know here in Ohio , because not many people trap any more, predators like raccoons, skunks and possum. Play hell on ground nesting birds, Quail, pheasant, and wild turkey. Quail would be the hardest hit.

One thing i tryed , i released breeders , after i get some eggs to hatch, release in pairs. Like in June before they stop laying. I do see some quail now days,

about 10 years ago i released like 10-15 for dog training on our land 42 ac an an we had them around for like 3 years but my father inlaw is a logger so there is alot of hidding spots.but then the hawks came in for a few years an byby quail.debbie loves to listen to the wistle alot prettier then her peacocks honk.hahahha

I moved the first bobs in the outside pens about 2 weeks ago. In the the next 10 days I caught 2 skunks a 4 possums... darnedest spring for them I ever seen. We have had both trying to move in for the last 6 weeks.Trying to dig in under my footing, sidewalks and porch. Since the birds went outside its got worse. Its been all out skunk wars!!! Unlike Charlie,Im not sure who's win'in. I got a higher body count thou...
