Free ranging owners

I do that, free range around our property!

We have 19 chickens and 8 ducks and 1 goose and 5 acres but they mostly stay pretty close around.

I have 300-350 chickens on about 2 acres. I fence mine to the max (6 foot high welded wire with 3 strands of electric fence on the outside). I'm not worried about them getting out, its the stray dogs that we occasionally have come through. A couple years ago (before I set up my fence) we had about 200 chickens (19 week old pullets) killed by a stray dog. Came home to find feathers everywhere and the dog back there chewing on one. That by far is the worst chicken predator we have out here. It was devastating to say the least, so many dead chickens we had to get out the backhoe to bury them all. I also divide those two acres in three sections to let the grass recover. Besides that its nice not having to watch out for chicken poop all over the yard..

I have 9 that are in a 1/3 acre fenced paddock with thier coop and some sheds to hide under. Unfortunately, I am now down to 7 because a redtail has discovered them and has killed 2 in the past week. Now the remaining 7 are confined to my extra 14X16' stall until the hawk moves on. they are not happy and I hope to be able to move them out again in 3-4 weeks....

I have about 350 chickens but there are only about 55 free ranging along with 22 ducks free ranging on 8 acres. They use maybe 3 acres of it. I have tractors scattered over the property and when I am not breeding from them I let the small flocks out during the day to free range since they stay near their tractor.
Some girls will go out in the pasture and down into the woods but not often and not many. I think I feed them too well!
