About 2 days ago I got 23 adult laying hens.. we normally free range our chickens, but since we got these new ones, were unable to. How much longer should I keep the chickens in the coop? I hate doing it because of how hot it’s been, but I don’t want these new ones to run away. After staying 2 days in the coop, do you think they’ll run away? Or should I keep them in there longer?

If they are already accepted into the flock they will stay with that flock. 2 days seems awful short time tho
They’re accepted. And I’m aware it’s too short. I just know that it’s hot and I’d hate to lose any over the heat. They have plenty of water and some fruits and veggies to help with the heat..

When we’ve added adult hens, I keep them in a few days until everyone is settled. For their first time out, I open the door about an hour before dark. They never go far from the coop and tuck themselves right back in after a bit of foraging. I gradually increase the time until I’m confident they’ll stay home. On their first full days out, I’m extra attentive to call them back for treats if they start to roam too far or head to a neighbors.
