Free rare chick breed?

Haha! I thought the same thing! They're considered exotic, but I was a little disappointed that my "rare" turned out to be an Easter Egger. I was looking forward to adding a new breed to my flock.

"Rare" can also mean that the hatchery just sent one of their many "extras", not ordered, that, if undelivered as a gift, might just have to be destroyed. Gives a lot of chicks a "life"! Chicks must be sent right away--cannot keep them an extra day, unless pullets that some hatcheries raise for sale as "point of lay" pullets. Most do not have facilities to raise any chicks after shipping time--that's the "business"!

I think you need to keep welsummer in mind too. It looks a lot like one to me and they are rare. At least more "rare" than an Easter Egger would be. You'll know for sure when the eggs come. Greenish versus dark brown.

Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not complaining about a free chick. I would take in a chick any day. Haha! I definitely wouldn't want the little guy to be destroyed!

Thanks fiveidahoboys, I will keep that in mind. :)

It could also be a Dark Cornish, which are a rarer breed, they have similar markings.

(The Dark Cornish are also listed in the McMurrey website under Their 'Rare Breed Special' Assortment)
