I would be mad about being lied to, for sure. Although the fact that they sold the roosters for a fairly good amount hopefully means the roosters won't end up being used for nefarious purposes (and there are fates worse than being eaten). Could you do home visits? All the rescue organizations won't adopt out anything (cats, dogs, horses, llamas, even hamsters and rats) without a home visit. You can get a pretty good idea I think from a home visit.

I agree with the others who said to charge something for the roosters, and if you feel like it's truly a good home, you can always knock down the price.

I just wanna say, please don't lynch me when I give my opinion but...

I have no problem with people flipping livestock animals. I do not being lied to, no, but, I have no problem with anyone (even myself) flipping livestock.

Now, if you had said you gave away a purebred puppy or a cat and they flipped that, well that's different. We don't eat dogs. or Cats.

I don't give my roosters away. I usually take extra roosters to auction and get $2-$4 for them when the market is good. There are people who will come get your free roosters to use for some unsavory practices, so really I'd be glad that they are selling them and not using them for something that's illegal.

Now, I will admit I've flipped LOTS of livestock. Our income is pretty limited, so if I'm able to get a free rabbit, goat, chicken, duck, etc. and it's not something I'm working with, heck yea I flip it!

But, I don't tell people I'm going to take it home and keep it or love it forever.

Last year we found 5 free pygmy goats on CL. We spent $20 in gas going to pick them up because the lady needed them gone right then because they couldn't keep them penned and they were tearing up her MIL's yard. We told them we weren't 100% sure that we would keep all or any of them, and they said they didn't care what we did with them as long as they were gone.

I flipped those goats for a $200 profit. Do I feel bad? Nope, because they all got good homes.

Neighbor guy up the road had almost 100 chickens. He was evicted out of his home and they had to go right then. He told us he didn't care what we did with the chickens, but he had a qaggle of geese he wanted kept together. My mom took his gaggle of geese, and they're happy as can be! The chickens were mostly silkies and a few Ameracauna and Leghorns. We sold off the worst looking birds at Auction, and it paid for my feed for about a month. The rest we cleaned up and sold locally. One guy traded me a pair of peachicks for a quad of Black Silkies!

So, no, I wouldn't be mad that they are selling them. Once you gave them away, they are theirs to do as they will with. I WOULD be mad about being lied to, but what can you do? A lot of people do that to get what they want to make a fast buck.

I realize there are people out there who don't believe you should sell something you got for nothing, but that's what bartering and flipping is about.

Buy' em back, post follow up on CL, notify admins and charge $$ for them. I personally, liked the really liked the reply where he told the woman that the roosters were scrawny and had no meat.....that was a good one!

Let's be honest, here. Chickens are, first and foremost, livestock, meant for production of eggs and meat. If you are raising them, by the droves, from eggs, just to have a warm fuzzy feeling, about new chicks, then, when they get to large to deal with and you can't handle them, that is your problem.

I've seen the ads, on Craigslist before, Rooster, to good home, $10, or whatever price. Well, I would never take such a deal, with lasting conditions, placed on the sale of such an animal...It would be no different than someone selling a dog, and demanding that I keep it in an airconditioned house, forever, just because that's what they did.

Of course, if I were to buy livestock, and you questioned the end result, I'd tell you, straightup, they are going to the table.

I heard of this happening to another member in TN. It's a crappy situation to be in- you can't keep ALL the roosters, and they don't seem to move unless they're free. There was just a story on the Chattanooga news last night about a huge fighting ring they broke up. Apparently fighting is only a misdemeanor in TN, instead of a felony like in other states, so there is a big business here now. Sad- but true. They are trying to toughen the laws- but it won't happen fast enough for us bird lovers. I will be really careful about where my roos go from now on.

There are lots of people in this area that 'flip' birds. I've not encountered any that took freebies (namely cause I didn't offer them

) but I've had several try talking me down on price when I knew full well that they would just turn around and sell them for twice as much.

If you are anywhere near Somerset KY, you should contact cthrash1. She has some friends that do actually just have chickens for the fun of it, they never sell and they never kill. She is often taking extra birds to their house

Sorry that you went through this, did you try contacting them to get the birds back?

It's just like people who buy stuff at yard sales and then turn around and sell it on eBay. I can see being angry about being lied to, but since we cannot control what other people do, you need to learn to let that anger go. Revenge is bitter, and the stress level from the anger and trying to think up a way to get even is not a healthy way to live. Just don't get caught that way again... that's all you can do about it. Sorry it happened to you.

I am so happy to get rid of my free roosters, I just don't particularly care if they are "flipped". Now, keep in mind, I am not giving away anything "of value". I don't consider most of my roos valuable. Dime a dozen.....the ones who do have some value, are "sold". I gave away a large group of bantam brahma boys last week. Not sure what they were going to do with them. I have given away 3 batches of roosters to a guy locally who has a farm and uses them for bug control. That is what he tells me at least. He said they have their girls penned up for eggs (red sex links) and leave the boys loose to control the bugs. But they have predator problems (foxes) and so lose some here and there. When he picked up my 2nd batch he mentioned they still had the first roo around (big aggressive jersey giant) but he liked to pick fights with the other boys and had to get a time out every few days.

Are they telling the truth? I have no idea. I think so. If they took a group of my boys and "flipped them" I would shrug and move on. I only "give away" birds that have no value to me. If I sell a bird for $5 or $10 and it gets "flipped" for $20 next week I would slap myself for not having priced it higher myself......and then move on.

Next time sign a contract where they agree to keep the birds for 6 months. If at any time before that they choose to not keep them, that they must return them to you; they cannot be sold or ownership transferred elsewhere during that time. If they do, they will owed you a waived fee of $25 per bird.

Hmmm, something like.

_____ birds sold to ________________________ for $25.00 each ($________ total). Fee is waived if birds are retained for at least 6 months. If for any reason the birds are not kept, ownership transfers back to ______________________. If any of the birds are sold or given elsewhere, each bird not retained or returned to ______________ will result in reinstatement of the waived sales price of $25 per bird.
