Freeze Drying Digest

Mulberries are finished. They’re not as full of flavor as when they’re fresh. The purple ones were the least flavorful fresh, but are now the fullest flavored. The white ones had the best flavor fresh and now have the least flavor dried. The black ones had medium flavor fresh and have a bit less flavor dried.

Our wild blackberries are about ready for harvest. I put some of my domestic thornless in the FD and noticed the same results you mentioned with the mulberries. They had less flavor than fresh. I'm curious to see how the wild blackberries will turn out. They tend to be sweeter than the thornless when they are fresh.

I did mine last week. I didn't like them enough to bother. Mulberries, to me, are a royal PIA.

We are doing them keeping in mind to have as much nutritional variety in our life as possible, not so much as to whether it's tasty.

I understand. I can't eat them anyway, and the leaves give me a rash.
I let the chickens have mine, then I steal their eggs, so technically....
I get it, you're still eating the mulberries, just in a different form. Best wholesome joke of the day! :gig

So I decided to pull out all my 5-gallon buckets of long term food storage and go through everything...

I was so clueless when I started this journey... 😔. I've learned so much since then...

Some of my beginner mistakes...

1. Stored quite a few boxes of pre-mixed dry goods... But looking closer at the ingredient list, most contain oils, shortening, dried eggs, etc... Things that will eventually turn rancid.

2. I apparently had FIVE bags of brown sugar. I won't need to buy brown sugar for the next 5 years. 😂

3. Relied on store packaging or Ziploc. I've had several items where I never repackaged them into mylar bags or I had them in large Ziploc bags... Upon closer inspection, most of that stuff now has grain weevils. Chucking it out. 😑
