Are they in a coop & run? A friend of a friend told me a story similar to yours. She could not fathom why her chickens would not lay in the nice henhouse she provided. Her birds are free-range! On 5+ acres!

Duh.

I told her: "Time for an egg hunt!"

Yeah they are barred rocks and black australoups.

And this is not my first flock of chickens. I don't think my expectations are that high. I have hens I would like them to lay some eggs. Not real high there Jess and Jeff. Not expecting 35 eggs a day. Three or four would get them all spared.

Have you considered the possibility that something or someone is taking your eggs before you get home each day? Other posters have mentioned snakes eating eggs and leaving no trace, also there could be a neighborhood egg thief of the 2-legged variety. If you free range them, they could be laying in the woods or under the house or just about anywhere. I say give them more time and keep a very close eye on them. Confine them or rake your sand smooth so you can see what is lurking about. Snakes leave a very distinctive track.

I am getting mixed vibes from you here. Are you just fed up and want them gone? If so, do what you need to do. Or, are you looking for more suggestions on helping your girls along? Either way, keep in mind you may get people that agree with you and you may get people that don't.

In my opinion, your expectations are high when you take into account the time of year, possible molting....which mine were born around the same time as yours (april) and they are doing just that...molting and the fact that they are only able to do what their bodies will allow. If you read more on this site you will find that you are not the only person having the same issues.

My hens at first did not lay in the coop. I had to lock them up in the coop. The first time, i find a nest with 12 eggs under the coop. I also had to lock the coop...cause the next door kids would go in it, play and throw the eggs for fun.

i think your going to get slammed with eggs come spring. I would suggest getting chicks earlier in the year.
