Freezer Purchasing Advice

We take up extra space with two liter bottles filled with water. Easy enough to pull them out when you need more room, and they really help to maintain the even temps you want in the freezer.

We do that too, 2 liter bottles as well as smaller 16oz or 20oz soda bottles. They're handy to pull out and throw in a cooler when you need one too!

It's a manual defrost, Natalie, but he's got this 'flash defrost' option that you throw on and it must heat the sides just a bit, so the ice slides down and you can clean it out quickly. It wasn't all that expensive, either.

good thread folks! it seems i got a little lucky for once...i have 3 different freezers that i've purchased on craigslist for pretty cheap and they're all manual defrost models! I'm gonna need another one soon since i have a bunch of quail i'm gonna get processed and now i know what to look for

Nice thread. I have a hand me down upright fridge, freezer at the top. I use it to chill the birds and then freeze until I place them into the chest freezers. I too like the manual defrost chest freezers for long term.

Auto defrost does use more electricity. When it goes in to defrost mode it heats up and then has to cool back down.
Manual defrost you just unplug it and let it melt/dry. The extra energy use is the heating process when in defrost mode.
At least this is what the HVAC dude at work tells me. (I have so little to do at work some days I tag along and try to learn these things)
