That's what I'm finding with the quail also. #10 hatched around 10:00 last night. When I moved 9 and 10 to the brooder, I had another one that had started to zip (before #9) but then stopped. It had been several hours and all he was doing was making a bigger hole. No rotation. So I moistened the membrane and put him back. The last other one with a pip had been rolled, so I uprighted it, and flicked the piece of shell off, and couldn't find a hole in the membrane. Dug a little bit to find the beak, opened the membrane a bit and dampened it too. A few minutes later, 11 and 12 started zipping and hatched around midnight. #12 came out with the most awful goo! Covered in it. And a bubble on his shoulder. Then #11 started crawling through it, so I quickly pulled 12 out and wiped it up, and wiped him off, got it out of his eyes, and put them back in. The last 2 (assisted ones) are still sitting in there, but I believe they will be mercifully culled when I get home. I'd love to see the one make it out, because its another blonde, but the one that made the huge hole will hopefully just give up. I don't think it stands much chance. But I'm very happy with 12!! Oh, #11 is a bit splay legged, but I didn't hobble it. We'll see if he improves today. This is #12: This morning. Its not hard like glue. Just crusty. He'll clean it off easily. But he's getting around fine so far.
Thanks for the condolences. My wife loved it. She had it running into her hand in the brooder. And, yes...I am looking forward to filling the brooder with blue AM's
Common sense would say so. But this is one of the first times that we have actually been able to stock pile our eggs. So I guess we just didn't have them around long enough in the past. Thanks very much for the info and for replying to my post
My guy had that sticky stuff in his lungs. He was breathing so heavy and there was a clicking sound every time he took a breath. Plus after I got him out of the glued shell, he was stuck to the bottom of the bator (I didn't know he was glued down) on his back for 8 hours, so I think that made the stuff settle in his lungs even worse.
I hatched a lone quail over the summer from my neighbors eggs (bad idea because his birds are very sickly) and it had curled toes and I remember trying to make booties and it was so hard because he was so TINY! They are very hard to work on!!
Awww that's horrible. This one isn't so glue-like. It was just kinda snotty lol! He was getting around fine this morning, so I think he'll survive. I hope the bubble goes away.
I noticed a couple bent toes. I hope I don't have to make booties!

I meant to comment on that also. I have wayyyy too many eggs right now. I usually bring them to work and give away, but hadn't had time to pack any up. I usually end up scrambling or hard boilding them for the birds when they get several weeks old, if we haven't used them, or I haven't given them away. But I've eaten some that were probably 6 weeks old with no bad taste. How old did you say those were?

I'm bad to let them pile up, and when I do I sort them by the float test. If they float, I toss them, and the rest are always fine. Six weeks is about as long as I like to go
That big blue that I'm so fond of runs out every time I go in there. It loves to be pet, and will arch it's back like a cat
It will be very spoiled by Saturday

Seems like right at 5-6 weeks they start going. I got slack over the winter, but now that the laying is starting to pick up, I will start boxing them to sell again. Anything that helps pay the feed bill
Just found one of my new babies dead. They were all doing well at 4am. Don't know what happened? He was the last born and seemed very healthy. He was a pretty blue.
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that! Well, that is how it goes sometimes. I hope all the others are doing fine. Bet the Mrs. Is hovering over them for sure now!
Last fall we bought 5 chicks from the feed store. They were EEs but we didn't know any better. Advertised as LF Ameraucana pullets. They were a day old. Out of those 5 we ended up with 2 roosters in the bunch, another one had a severe crooked beek. It was sad. She just couldn't eat & after a few days of working with her it was obvious she was gonna starve so the DH had to destroy her. It was sad because she was still very active but I didn't want her to suffer. And our first ever baby chicks...that we got as hatchlings. Out of those 2 survived Lil Red, & Cloud. They are super mutts but are beautiful & amazing & Lil Red is the friendliest bird we own! When we bought them we didn't even have a brooder set up!
But now.....I'm gonna be a nervous wreck! We ordered 20 babies from a very reputable breeder who wins at the shows also! Recently with a black cockerel & a blue wheaten pullet. The black won National! I'm so excited!
I have ordered 8 blue wheatens, 7 blacks, & 5 blues! And l can't wait! He said he would probably throw in a few extras just in case...a relief to know that if I do lose any there are a few extras!
I have rode horses all of my life & broke them professionally between the age of 12 & 15 including our own. We have also had many German Shepherds throughout the years. I have a porcelain German Shepherd dog collection to die for too. On live shepherds we have had several flakes....& several einsteins! We also love Shetland sheepdogs, the little shelties. They are so precious!!!
And then there's my love for John Wayne! We won't go there! Lol. Hope you have a good weekend!
The 2 cockerels we rehomed. Out of the 5 we only lost crooked beek, but also only ended up with 2 keepers...
