French frogs

Well I decided to call it on my last iffy Orloff egg.

I went in through the air cell and unwrapped the little body. It was perfectly formed, yolk mostly absorbed but beak pointed straight down at the bottom of the egg -never tucked it's head under the wing to pip.

Since it got so close, I'll include it in lockdown totals so I ended up with 10/11. ( 16 set, 3 clears, 2 late quitters. 1 dis.).

All 10 are doing well so far. Will change over to the bigger brooder tote this afternoon.

Thanks.  My wife is heartbroken that was her favorite chick.  I loved the EE's I had a long time ago, in fact a blue hen was one of my top five favorite birds.  That's why I'm getting AM babies from Flock this weekend.  :yesss:   and they're blue on top of that :yesss: :yesss:    Make sure you post pics of your chicks when they arrive.
Death is sad....even if it's a baby chick. But still have all the other little cuties! And~your gonna love your blues from Sc!!! Exceptional top breeding stock! Be sure & post pics & I can't wait to post mine! I bet one of those babies from Sc steel her heart!

Great hatch! Sorry about the one. I think we all did pretty well this weekend!

I'll open my 2 quitters this evening.

Thanks Ravyn, that's what I thought...maybe I had a bad one in the bunch or just fed way too much garlic!
Wise idea especially with your bone chilling temps! I shiver just thinking about it! Thanks for the info!

Yep, flavors can be passed to the eggs... plus eggs absorb odors as well... if they were in the fridge at all and you had something super spicy in there that wasn't fully covered, that could have affected them as well... :hu

Raw or cooked?

Cooked is best, I hard boil a bunch then madh them up into chunks with an old potato masher, shell and all to feed them... but once in a while I'll just toss overly dirty eggs through the fence for them... as long as the shell busts up good, watch out for the bouncing unbreakable egg, lol... never gotten egg eaters from doing that either... in fact, I had an EE that started out as an egg eater but after feeding them back some eggs once in a while, she quit...

Sorry for the DIS... still a great hatch... I had a single Call hatch the other day, but it didn't make it... reinforced the not setting pullet Call eggs for me... :/

Maybe you'll have enough to get me on your waiting list next year.  :)

I hatched out a couple of exceptional turkeys from my flock, and it looks like Ravyn may have gotten one too.  I've been stirring up the gene pool with non-APA color varieties (domestic turkeys are all one breed, so it's not a bad thing).  I look forward to sharing my newest with you as he grows in his mature feathers.  He's the turkey equivalent of a blue laced red Wyandotte, but the colors are not quite so bold.

Oh, meant to tell you... the 5 other OG eggs are still going strong... 1 has a slightly smaller than ideal air cell, but the other 4 are spot on... due next week, Thurs... :D ;)

Looking forward to pics of those!

Am seriously loving the turkeys... they are super sweet and much more calm than chicks or 'lings... unless you give them broccoli, lol...

Btw, you're supposed to be SC's buddy... :gig

See??? He gets hangry when his narcissism isn't fed frequently...

Lovely looking little pudgey Am chicks... looking good... maybe I should set some of my Am's too... :D ;)

Yeah - the Orloffs are pullet eggs 10 months or so? They've been laying for a while, but Grischa lays fairly small eggs that haven't changed sizes. Not sure they will ever get any bigger.

I'm really happy with the hatch though. Now I need to figure out what I'm going to set next month..........
