Finally got to building my new outdoor brooder. I have no problem with a dozen chicks or half a dozen turkeys in the house for a couple of weeks, I am set up for that. But I have over 200 eggs growing in the incubator and need somewhere to grow them, plus a dozen chicks and a half dozen turkeys in the house and a half dozen turkeys in the grow out pen.
So I started on a two tier brooder. Dimensions are based on the size of the grow out room and made use of 3 partial sheets of OSB salvaged from a restaurant construction job.
I still need to make the doors and floors, but it's coming along. I'll just plop a piece of corrugated plastic roof panel on top for now and improve on it later.
56" wide, 30" deep, 60" high with 22" clear underneath (there is a door to the outdoor run behind the spot I am installing this) with 2 18" high brooder pens. Wire mesh floors will allow droppings to fall, a catch board or pan will be installed underneath.
Since there is no way to get it into the coop assembled, It's built for easy knockdown and reassembly. Once in place, I'll install additional screws in the back panel to hold it all together. I may build a removable divider for the upper pen for starting chicks and turkeys at the same time, but not sure yet. I usually leave turkeys inside for a couple of weeks until they are fairly well feathered.
