Freshly hatched gosling in incubator

Good news this morning. The little gosling is doing well, chirping and standing up, although a bit wobbly still. I took it out when not fully dried, but he was trying so hard to stand up in the incubator and could not. "Little Peeper" has taken a couple of sips of water, but does not seem to be interested yet. LP comes to my voice and whistles when I am not next to him.

I put old flannel sheets ripped to the size of the plastic bin, over pine shavings for all my little ones for the first few days at least to see how their poops look and to keep the shavings from sticking to their feet. This is a problem with the Salmon Faverolle chicks I have had for about a month. They are not in their permanent coop, but without access to the run for now.

I am not sure what to do bout all the eggs. I cannot imagine that they are all viable. She has been sitting a bit longer each morning. I cannot get near the nest without the gander charging me, but at least he lets me get near her when she is not on the nest.

The local farm store is supposed to be selling waterfowl tomorrow. I think I will stop by and see if I can find LP someone to be with. Would a chicken be a good brooder pal for LP if they do not have any geese?

Hopefully you can find a gosling since waterfowl are so messy with their water having a chick in with it would not be a good idea. Chances are the chick could get wet chill and die. You could go inside where she is nesting and close them off from being able to get in so you can candle the eggs and see who is alive and who isn't and remove the ones that aren't.
Such wonderful news that your little one is up and making progress. Such a cutie too. Love the name LP. It usually takes them a day or 2 to get hungry and want to eat and drink since the yolk was absorbed and feeds them.

I tried to candle the eggs that I have taken from the nest, but I need to educate myself a bit more as I cannot understand what I am looking at unless the eggs have been developing for several days.

The egg I had with LP was one out of four. I thought it was also a good possibility for a gosling. I am going to clean the incubator and start some fresh goose eggs. Should I remove the month old ones? She was sitting on the eggs this morning, but when it was time for treats for all the poultry, she was out with the boys again.

Yes, he is imprinting on me and really likes the company. I try to spend a few minutes with him whenever I am going past his bin.

If you candle month old eggs you should def see life if there is life. You can put a mirror in with LP secure so it doesn’t fall on it and that will give it company.

I will give it a try. Would there be life if she was not sitting on them more steadily than she has? She only sits on them it seems about an hour a day when she is laying another egg.

If me I’d take all eggs up candle them all and if any are fresh like under 10 days put them In your bator. Then maybe give your gosling a week or so to get strong and introduce to your gaggle through fencing and see how they react. My goslings were 3 weeks old when I gave them to my pair and they were sturdy and strong and because my goslings and geese had been spending time together outside daily it went perfect. I always supervised their time together.

Perfect idea!!!! Thanks. Similar to introducing new chickens. I still will go by the local farm store and see about another gosling for LP. Weather is getting good. I have a portable fencing I used for my current geese when they were young so I could get them outside in the fresh air and sunshine a few hours each day. Only so called problem was that the chickens would jump inside and not be able to get out quickly enough before the geese chased them. And they never learned. Thanks again, Cara

I have chickens too so exactly what your saying maybe since the goslings would be inside the fencing and your adults on the outside the chickens wouldn’t even try. Please let us know how it goes and if you find a friend for LP
