I picked these 2 hens up in early April. My first 2 hens ever! I ahvent owned chickens since I was 5-6 years old. When i got these girls, they were shy, and seemed to love roosting as high up as they could! Of course I have spoiled them mercilessly since I got them.
Crackers is my hopping hen. She likes to try to get whatever I ahve in my hands. She doesnt flap, just just bounces up, toes splayed out like a wind up toy and her head pointed straight up. She is still shy of being touched or picked up, but she is not afraid to tell me how horrible thier living conditions are. No flower garden, no jacuzzi, not midnight room service. As a result, she lays a small brown egg every day. She is fat and round and the biggest of the 2 hens. She loves pushing Frightful out of the favorite nest box when she is ready to lay.
Frightful was the shyest bird I had, but now she lets me pick her up. She was also the first to lay. She has such lovely red feathers. She is dainty and petite and lays and enormous eggs almost every day!
These things could choke a snake! Anyhow, she is funny to watch laying those eggs, though i do worry about her hurting herself! She also will squat for me every morning, but i think she believes Im an idiot roo because i dont oblige her lol.
Both these birds were rescued from a chicken farm. They were infested with mites and were so under weight i could feel thier bones. The people i got them from were just selling birds to make a buck. Every morning I let them come out and eat the slugs in the lawn. They love dandy lions more than anything. And Junebugs. they go crazy when one finds a Junbug in the yard.
