I have a few “barnyard mix” chickens and I’m wondering about my girl Ms. Frizzle and thought I’d ask to gain a better understanding of the frizzle gene.

Her mother was a blue Cochin and there are several possible fathers. The mom was a normal smooth feathered Cochin. If I understand the genetics of frizzle…it is dominant? So the father would have to be a frizzle, yes? Otherwise the mom would have been a frizzle?

If that is true…does that mean she isn’t a mix? But a full Cochin? The breeder has a black frizzle Cochin rooster and I would have to assume he would be the father? As I am unaware of frizzle Marans or Isbars? Or am I wrong and still not aware of all the crazy chicken genes that are possible?

Just curious! Not that it matters other than learning more about genes! And what color egg to expect if she ever lays for me 😆

Okay cool! Thanks for the confirmation. And if she only breeds Cochins, Ameraucanas, Orpingtons, Langshan, Marans and Isbars…the Cochin is the likely frizzle donor? :)
Yep. Responsibly bred frizzles have one Frizzle gene and one Not. So Ff.

This means on average when bred to a normal feathered bird, half the chicks will be normal and half will be frizzled

Cool, thanks for the info! So I have a couple more from the same hatch (she had a slutty hen that escaped while she was on vacation 😆) I rehomed all the boys, and one was a frizzle…but the other three pullets may carry the frizzle gene but not show it if the frizzle rooster was responsible for more than a couple of the babies. I have a black pullet that looks Cochin to me…but I’m not well versed in the breeds. I’ll only know if I hatch some I suppose! Thanks again!
