Thanks. I am new to chickens and did not prepare myself for the fact that you lose some of these little ones. Is loss very common, is it something that you learn to expect? I am not sure i could get used to it.

I have a few in my latest batch with wacky feathers like that. They seem to be doing fine but I think the crazy temperatures have something to do with it. Mine are fully feathered and still under the light but we have freezing temps then really hot days/nights. Looks like now the feathers are starting to fall out and they are getting in the second set.

Unfortunately, loss does seen to be fairly common. They're fragile little things. I don't deal in oodles of chicks, so I couldn't say percentages or anything, but I've lost a couple favorites. My latest special little runt passed on me just last week. I'll never get used to it, either.

Thank you everyone for your kindness. I tried real hard to keep this little one with us. I guess this is going to take some getting used to. Is it to be expected that you will lose one or more with every batch of chicks in the brooder? I only started with six to begin with!
