Frontline Plus for dogs & cats - are they the same formula?

I wouldn't suggest touching either anyway especially advantage multi. People have trouble with overdosing miniature ponies on moxidectin. It makes me very nervous to apply a dose that is just designed for a weight range on a smaller animal.​

Drontal is a great broad spectrum dewormer, and only needs done once. That's what we use.

I recently started my dogs on Comfortis (oral flea meds) and I am THRILLED with it. I had been having major problems keeping them flea free until I started this - the fleas now bite them and fall down dead. It's amazing. I've also heard that its major ingredient (spinosad) is a pesticide and you can just give them that with the same results for much less money.

I just bought the praziquantel tablets at the feedstore last month. Worked like a charm. I am very pleased.
It was about $15 for 3 tabs. On-line it is about $15 for 8 tabs.

Wynette, yes, praziquantel is the tapeworm dewormer. That is the generic name, Cestex is the other type. I don't know if you can get it OTC or not, you used to had to get it from a veterinarian only. Drontal is a broad spectrum and does kill roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms in cats and dogs. I would use your frontline for at least 3 months in a row. You can also use Capstar which you can give daily to kill fleas if needed but it DOES work. I'm not sure if you can give comfortis to cats and it is expensive for a pill but it also works great on dogs, just not sure about if you give it to cats. Tapeworms are the least harmful of parasitic worms but they are still gross and the cats will shed the segments in your house and on your furniture

It takes about 6-10 weeks for a cat to eat a flea infested with the tapeworm and it grow and develop to begin shedding segments.

I had tried the Cestex from the vet, but it didn't seem to make a dent in the tapeworms. Might be because that particular cat got terribly obstipated a couple years age and I had to have his large intestine removed. It has been SO nice the last month since I used the praziquantel. The fleas were really bad earlier this year. I think our lack of winter this year did not kill them off. I've been using a combo of Advantage and Capstar and I think I finally got a handle on them.

Just as a note, SafeGuard is a brand name for Fenbendazole which is a broad spectrum dewormer labeled for dogs. I would have to look up to see if the trade name drug (Fenbendazole) is safe for cats and in what dosage. Most dewormers are safe but that particular brand is not labeled for cats so again, it would be off label if anyone decides to use it. That basically means that you can't sue the company if you give it to your cat and something happens. I also don't think it's very effective for tapeworms. I have NEVER in my decade and a half of being a vet tech seen a dewormer cause adverse effects in ANY animal but that does not mean it can't happen. If you are going to use any drug for off label use, do your research on the drug name and the dosage before using it. Personally, I use Drontal for my cats and dog and I use Revolution and Frontline for flea control. I have also used Comfortis and Capstar with good results. A few of the other brands like K9 Advantix did not work for my dog personally. I have seen people put Advantix on their cats and the cats WILL die from it. Cats also cannot tolerate pyrethrins and permethrins so be VERY careful about WalMart, Petco, drugstore, OTC flea control brands.

Yes Drontal works on everything, and well. Yes it is ok for kitties too, although there are separate ones for kitties or doggies. You should be able to get it OTC, from your local vet. If they are snobby about it, try a different vet. Just tell them you are a vet tech and know your animal has tapeworms and you just want to buy it. Good thing is you only have to do it once. (As long as you have your fleas under control). We do it yearly on all our rescue cats as a preventative.
