Frost Bite, anything else I can do?

@Frazzemrat1 How is your Leghorn?

I too have one of those leghorns that was "free":) She is a hoot - I had never considered a Leghorn since I figured they might be too flighty or not do as well with my "docile" girls. I have been pleasantly surprised! And she is an egg laying girl!

@Rob Tof I just can't help but get tickled over your post - the image of putting a sox on your leghorn cracks me up:lau

Well, Foghorn (original, I know) stopped laying for the winter, which is fine with me. The comb is what it is. We're still catching her and applying Vaseline every other day, to both the comb and the wattles. We'll see how she ends up. Nobody else seems to be having any problems... Otherwise, she's eating and drinking normally. Comes to the gate to see if I have treats when I go to the run...

I'm glad she is eating/drinking. Hopefully the vaseline will help prevent more loss. She will be fine with less comb, it's just always a worry about infection or pain.
Mine has not stopped laying - one everyday, but boy is she eating - last night she looked like she had literally swallowed a grapefruit - I was wondering how she could even walk - her crop was flat this morning - she's always the first one out for food:)

Yea, of my three that started laying before winter, two stopped; Foghorn and Silver (the Silver Spangled Hamburg). Since then, My EE, BJG, and BR started.. Possibly the GLW and/or the SS. Just gotta wait for the brahmas to catch up. LOL I'm assuming that will happen when the days get longer again.

We have had colder than normal temps here in New England for a while now. The only girl I’ve been concerned for is our leghorn. Despite my best efforts, I think she’s going to lose a third of her comb. Is there anything else I can do for her? To make her comfortable?

I've had similar problems with my Roos. Before the temps got frigid, I was trying to be proactive and literally nothing worked. I tried bag balm, Vaseline and hen healer. My roos will probably lose a majority of their combs. I've done would I could...

Get hydrogel spray and apply to the comb 2-3 times a day. It should speed up the healing process. This should be done with her being inside in an enclosure in the garage or basement if she isn't already.

I have nowhere to bring her in to. I don't have a garage, and our basement is a complete basement. My husband was all for bringing the whole flock indoors, but for the nights. I had to teach him that they can't handle the temp change, and that if we bring them in at this point, we'd have to keep them in for the season.
All that said, I've been doing the best for her that I can.

Maybe treat her in for treatment twice a day leaving her in for an hour so it can dry off the best it can?

My thoughts were I wear a hat to keep my head warm. So I used my sons old sock. I think I’ll try it again with some changes. After I put it on I’ll see if I can bribe with treats. I think she just needs to get used to it.
