Frost Bite, anything else I can do?

Well, my plastic is finally coming in today (maybe, with the blizzard). My son and I are going to get out there and wrap the covered portion of the run, that includes the coop, just in time for the sub-zero day time temps we’re supposed to get on Saturday. This should help greatly, I hope.

Did you ever post photos of your coop/run?
Wrapping is not a bad idea, but remember to leave plenty of ventilation. I try to add wind blocks to my run. In the coop I also added some deep straw - never have before (normally it's all shavings), but we are getting cold weather for a prolonged period of time - the girls seem happy with the extra straw.

I did... but it was a while ago. This is going to be a wind block. Let me see if I can find my coop posts...

I have three blue Andalusia and two of them have frostbite on HALF their combs. They all stay in the coop all day and there is about a foot of hay in there. No toes as of yet. They are all eating and drinking as usual. I have no idea what to do about frostbite!

Ventilation, to make sure the moisture from the breathing and poo can escape, and Vaseline on the combs to make sure that moisture can’t accumulate on their combs and freeze. That’s all prevention. Once it’s done, there’s not much you can do except make sure it doesn’t spread.

Nice! Do you have ventilation up top so there's airflow when you close it up?
Wrapping your run it a great idea, that should help get them out a little, all of mine are mostly piled up inside, but will venture out quickly here and there, even with wind blocks, they are much more comfortable inside (gusting up to 35mph winds right now) I'm sure we aren't as frigid as you, but...it's still cold.

They are big producers, but I had decided against them due to the cold and their combs. The rest of my girls are either rose or pea combs, and the three that are single combs have the small single combs. Cest la vie. I move on.

For you leghorn lovers: (and what's not to love with those beautiful white eggs?) Don't forget that the leghorn comes in a lot of different colors with a ROSE comb! You can have your white eggs, your leghorn, AND a small comb all wrapped up into one neat little package.

Yes, the top of the coop has ventilation, so I’m not concerned there. Right now the girls are either hanging out in the coop or in the covered cat boxes turned nest boxes. I just want to give them more blocked from the snow and wind.

I might seriously look into them too, once this lady gets old. Considering she’s still only a pullet! I can’t replace her yet!!! Lol
