Frost bite on comb, swollen wattles, and strange toes! help!

We have been having some really cold weather the past week.

It's been waaay below zero(like -30*F at night and -10*F on one morning when it was really cold!) We have 4 red star girls that share a coop with their rooster, Marty, the RIR rooster. He's had frost bite last year and it just went away, but now he has other issues:


Name: Marty
Breed: Rhode Island Red
Age: 2 years old
Symptoms:frost bite on comb. One of his wattles are swollen pretty bad. And some of his toes look like they have frost bite on them.

Coop: has two long perches to sit on with his 4 girls. nest boxes. pine shavings and sawdust on the floor and in nest box. there's a lamp near the water dish to keep it from freezing and so the chickens have light and some warmth.

The red star girls have smaller combs/wattles, so they don't have barely any signs of frost bite. And their toes are fine.

Poor guy.

His comb has some yellowish parts on it, with little black parts(frost bite) and it looks awful.

I didn't have a chance to really look at his toes, but my siblings said that they don't look "normal" or they have frost bite on them, too. One of his wattles has some yellowish color on it and it's pretty swollen.


What can we do to help get rid of the frost bite, and make it so he's not in pain? Are there any natural remedies that we can use?

You can not get rid of frostbite you can only help it heal. You can put neosporin, diaper cream, bag balm etc.. on the site to help. If you notice that it is hot to the touch and swelling you more than likely have an infection and need to start antibotics.

Could you post a pic so we can see how bad it is? If his feet are frost biten to some said that you can soak them in empsom(sp?) salt bath.
