Frostbite?

is this the beginning of frostbite? Or just the normal pecking order pecking on combs?

My big too has his comb and wattle frozen solid tonight. Locked the chickens up when I got home at 6pm and there he was waiting for help. Can anyone direct me to some help pages for treating this?

okay, we are hitting 20 below so I'm going through the coops trying to keep it warm without making a fire... cause duh. I have been using hay and woodchips, but ran out of wood chips and have ample hay bales. I built up a wall on one side of the coop (its a 6'x6', and 8' tall coop) to block off any arctic air from coming in the window that is at roost level. With my rooster already looking sad- his comb is thawed out and sore I'm sure, is beginning to turn black, I want the coop to stay above freezing. Will the hay do it do you think? I have a ceramic heat lamp, but I really do not want to try to put a heat source in there with the hay.

Heat lamps are fine if kept dust free and 18" above bedding.
Frostbite can be warded off with vaseline, if you have a frozen bird bring her or him inside. Keep them there for a day and then return them back to the coop under a heat lamp, reclimatize them.
It is -40°F and -40°C here- minimal frostbite. Frostbite on the tips of the comb is ok, it happens all the time, just leave it. If it affects more than the tips, bring the animal inside.

Hi there, one of my chickens has frostbite on her foot and I've been treating it according to this article, extremely helpful. I didn't use the medicine she recommends BUT I did do the Neosporin, the bandaging, etc and it's working great so far. Chickie's feet are warm again with full circulation and I'm so relieved! Highly recommended!

frostbite sure hurts - would be great if you could put a snood over his comb to keep it warmer.

His frost bite got pretty bad. Wattles weren't bad off but his comb turned black almost halfway down from the tips. We were also battling mites and I think the combination of those got him pretty sick. I had trouble getting him to drink enough water too. He died yesterday morning. I thought he might make it since he didn't show any sign of infection from the frostbite. Thanks for all your help through this. The rest of the flock is doing well.
