Frozen water this morning!

I am cheap and just take out a plastic waterer in the am and afternoon with warm water in it.

The problem with putting out warm water is that it freezes faster. Not sure why, but my science-oriented hubby says it's so.

I just fill up the gallon chicken waterer from the hose tap on the side of the house every morning. When it gets below freezing I'll set it on top of the cookie-tin waterer we just made. One 15 watt bulb and a ceramic socket from Menards and a cheap extension cord. Should provide enough warmth to keep the water liquid and somewhere for the girls to gather around.
Oh dear... I just got a great mental picture of the hens gabbing around the office water cooler, complaining about the weather....

The answer is nipple waterers... so simple. I use a 5 gallon bucket drill three holes in them put in a rubber grommet and the nipple... no leaks, no spills, no poo or litter in the water. Farm-tek . In the cold weather (I am in northern Illinois) I hang a birdbath de-icer in each one... no frozen water, no dirty water and I only have to fill them twice a week in the winter.

I walk nearly 250ft to the coop to change the water with a 5gal bucket I carry to the coop. Nothing freezes since I have a 250watt heat bulb over the waters.

could you send me the info on the heated hoses... I have been looking for them for a long time... it would certainly beat caring water buckets for the horses...
