Frustrating not knowing where someone lives.

Yeah, I suggest this to some people sometimes when I am answering their posts, especially if it makes a difference to the answer. What is surprising, a few actually do it after I suggest it.

I certainly understand not wanting to give away too much information on the internet, but a general idea that actually gives you a clue would help. If someone says they are from Grover's Corner, I'm not sure which county, state, or country they are talking about.

I know it won't change though so I'll keep muddling through.

I'm glad to see people agreeing with me. For example; it's tough answering someone's question about cold weather care for their birds not knowing if they live in Alabama or Alaska. It does make a difference not only to the person with the question but to anyone else reading the answer.

I know. I have friends from SOCal that are moving to Michigan. I was trying to explain the 80 degree difference between summer and winter... and if it's truely cold here, sorry, your hoodie won't cut it.. You need some tripple fat goose

I differ on that opinion. If we were "required" to give identifying info, such as our state, then I'd either 1) make one up and put something in far from where I actually live or 2) not participate in the site. I'm sure I'm not the only one. The option we currently have allows privacy. A person may not get as much help when something is geographically specific, but at least they have the option to only share what private info they choose to share.

Me? I'd put in continent and even country, but beyond that? Nope. Not into a profile.

I guess even paranoids have enemies but can't see what kind of problem could arise from at least give the state you live in after all you're using an assumed name anyway. Granted there is private but know what state or even region you reside in hardly qualifies. I guess if you're willing to forgo some helpful information, then that's your choice but I hope you don't end up losing chickens because of it. Heck, in this day and age if someone is really interested in tracking down a person it can be done especially if that person is attached to the Internet.

Edited to add:

Heck, some post a picture of persons other than themselves or, like obits, ones taken 40 years ago.

I think that is overkill. For the most part, no one you meet on a forum like this is going to care who you are. I don't understand the extreme caution of some people. I live outside of Columbus. There are 767,000 people in Columbus. 300 of them have the same name as I do. Who's gonna track me down? And why would that person want to?

If you haven't listed your CITY/TOWN, STATE under your NAME yet, please go to (click) Profile (on the dark-blue line above) and then to the list on the left hand side titled Profile Menu. Going there and choosing the second item on the list, PERSONAL, you can type in the name of the city or town, state where you live.
