Fugly Farm

Mama had the babies out in the big yard yesterday afternoon. I think she was feeling a wee crazy having to stay in the coop until the babies could get out though.
I have taken so few pictures of Lucy's last batch. She has two, one is a solid week older than the other. I'm sure, based on attitude, that they are both males.

I was sure one of our chicks was a roo based on attitude. Turned out to be a pullet, she was just rambunctious and didn’t take any stuff from the boys.

I'd like to think so. But so far it's been the year of the rooster around here 3 females out of 9, not counting these two. One is a legbar mix so I'm pretty certain (based on the prior mixes) that he is a he. The other has the top of the world attitude down.

That king of the world attitude does give it away! I’m sorry you’re getting so many boys this year. That seems to be the case at my sons place too. They brought me two pullets and cockerel that turned out to be two cockerels and a pullet.

It wouldn't be so bad, if I didn't have such personable boys. I cannot eat them, because they are so social with me, the dogs, and my husband. He loves the one I call Ryder, even though he gets in his raised beds. 🤣

I know, it’s really hard not to get attached. I don’t like any part of the killing/ processing, but as a last resort it’s my best option. I don’t like eating them either. They taste good and all that, but I knew them personally and it’s something I can’t get past. I will make dog food with any boys I can’t rehome this time.

Years ago, my daughter would spend her summer vacation with my family in Texas. She got attached to a wild piglet that my brother was raising. His name was Bacon. She cried and cried, the next summer, when she found out her bacon came from Bacon. She stopped eating pork after that. I've tried the vegetarian lifestyle, but I've never wholeheartedly embraced it. My oldest brother, who has been an avid hunter all his life, told me recently, that he can no longer kill things. He said, as he nears his mid 70s that he just doesn't feel right about it any longer. Myself, I'm OK with becoming Solent Green, but I don't like killing as much as a spider.
I've been struggling with this lately. I think it's better to slaughter ones roosters oneself, than to assign them to a possibly worst fate with a stranger.

I can definitely relate Janie. I don’t eat as much meat as I used to these days, but I’m not a vegetarian. I think a lot more people would be though if they had to kill their own meat.

Your brother is much like my husband, he also says he doesn’t have the heart to kill things unless he must. At least wild animals have a chance to get away, captive animals don’t. I completely understand his mindset so we quit processing because we both dislike it. That being said, we do feel we’ve put in the time and attention to raise the birds so if they’re going have to be food, they’ll feed our family and not someone else’s. We’ll do it quickly and humanely and they had a good life otherwise.
