Fun Fact of the Day:___!

Recent volcano eruptions in Iceland have reduced global carbon emissions, contrary to popular thought. The ash fallout has grounded so many European flights approximately 2.8m tons of green house emission have been avoided.

Oh England:love !!!
I used to live there when I was really young. Miss it a lot and prefer it in most aspects to Australia.

I just see politics as pointless. Even though 'we as a people' should be able to change the way we live and are governed it really doesn't seem to be working....I think.lol.
x2 agree, SO MUCH WASTED TIME AND MONEY on what I see as just crap.lol!!!

Yes, all that seems to happen is the opposition party gets in, they take down everything the first party went for, ending back at the start. Then the first party gets back in and takes down the opp party's decisions and it's am endless circle of nothingness.....UNLIKE SCIENCE:D !!! ( I really like science ).

We left England when I was 11. I think it's a more awesome country in many regards as well. :p

But Australia has its merits too, for example newer houses (our house in Leeds leaked above the garage and the boiler had a thing going), more space, cleaner streets, lower crime rate (at least here), more job opportunities - whoo, how's that going to go under the Liberals if the first few months are anything to go by - and a more modern way of thinking. :D

...I mean, if you just ignore the monarchy part for now.

It is actually RIDICULOUS how much campaigning material we get. Yesterday we had two telephone messages and seven letters. And they pretty much said the same things as the ones we got last week. If there were no democracy they could've taken all the money saved on sending out propaganda and bailed out Qantas - coupled with axing the CEO (sorry Joyce, I did a massive portrait of you for year 10 art but you kind of can't do your job) someone could've saved a few thousand workers and prevented the opening of the new export industry, Australian jobs (Bill Shorten's insults are such a hoot! The one about Abbott's refugee policies was pretty awesome actually.)

One party (maybe a particular type of party?! I'm sorry, it's just my opinion) could get things done for us!!! Projects wouldn't get scrapped before they even start due to funding cuts back and forth. The only people making money out of all of this are the guys (and gals) giving themselves bonuses and sitting on their fat fortunes while hundreds of others are made redundant thanks to their fine work, the work they deserved the bonus for. And hey! Maybe they aren't even as rich as they could've gotten if the government could actually get something done. :lau (Although maybe that's an achievement in itself ;))

WHOO! I like science too! I especially like physics and chemistry. :D My favourite topic in IB was particle physics. I am sad to hear that particle physics is getting scrapped from the syllabus. Just after the Higgs boson got discovered too...

That sounds brilliant

I shouldn't be one to speak though, my life has pretty much revolved around flying between continents. I think my flight miles are approaching 100,000

Wait so are you now in Australia?
I loved where we used to live. I have heard Leeds is a pretty sketchy place though.lol.
More job opportunities here in Aus!!?!?!?! I don't think so.lol. I have yet to have my own job but our area is a pretty poor place to pick up work, unless you want a crap mcdonalds job.

Sorry, your 3rd and 2nd paragraphs from the bottom makes no sense to me, I have no idea who Joyce is or this new export industry.
I am aware of the S$*%T that QUANTA is in.lol. I believe they are in debt of something like 24 million or Billion dollars. Are they not shutting down though?
Please continue posting your thought on politics, I won't get them.lol. But I will read them, information is always accepted. I probably won't be able to reply either but I will take it in

You sound like Sheldon, hahahah!
I have yet to choose my senior electives but I think I will select all of the sciences, if possible. Not sure on Physics though as I am not and ace with maths but I will see how this year goes then decide.
Perhaps you could teach me some fundamentals on beginner physics?
I have just started on gravity in science after finishing Newtons 3 laws. Fun fact - On the earths surface the acceleration of all the objects is 9.8m/s/s ( can't write squared ).
Also I now have a full understanding on black holes.lol. Well I think only scratched the surface!

I have heard it in TBBT but what is the Higgs Boson?
Does that mean I can't pick particle physics?

It's been popular thought that the volcano has caused mass emissions, but testing has proven otherwise.

It has been thought that one eruption has spewed more emissions than all modern humanity I myself thought this was the case until recently), but the info I have read shows above and below sea eruptions account for less than 1% of annual global emissions.

I found it interetsing to learn both those tid bits.

Yeah I too did some research on it and that old theory has been rendered wrong.
I too read that same passage. I also read that the 2010 Icelandic volcano too debunked that theory.
So are you saying the volcano has gone off again? Because I couldn't find anything on a 2014 Icelandic volcano.

I didn't go back to which one...the one that I could not say, let alone spell...looked kind of like e'lwjuebgae4irbvivjvbdfvj4b;zfd;jfdjuik' In Icelandic I think it means "Angry hollow hill with hot red stuff inside" I could be wrong though, my Icelandic is a bit rusty.

Are we talking about 'Eyjafjallajokull' (with dots above the o)? :p

I'm not very knowlegeable on volcanoes but I've managed to get this one's name (including how to say it) ingrained in my brain thanks to some very amusing audio my friend and I found, of various foreigners attempting to pronounce the offending word, followed by the correct version from a local.

I am indeed in Australia now. Jobs for us youngsters are indeed a bit scarce right now, but when it comes to the economy in general I think we're still a bit better off than England. (Or maybe that was the case when the mining boom was still viable... everyone says Labor screwed that one up nicely, but we got through the GFC relatively unscathed, mining boom or not, so I suppose we should be thankful for that). We have strong ties with Asia. A lot of growth is happening there right now.

Joyce is the Qantas CEO. :p You may have seen him on TV, he's the one with the funny accent and glasses, sometimes. He was voted in over John Borghetti, who has gone and done fantastic things at Virgin instead.
Joyce doesn't get along with the unions. Qantas was grounded for a while back then because they were having a fight.
They are in pretty heavy debt with a junk status credit rating. Tony Abbott refuses to give aid, debt guarantee or sympathy. 5000 jobs schedued for axing.

And hey, don't diss Leeds. :p Despite all its shortcomings,it's my hometown and it's kind of... scenic? (In some parts anyhow.)

And I would be happy to teach you some physics! It would help me consolidate my knowlege, and besides, I kind of like talking about physics. :p
The Higgs boson is the particle responsible for giving other particles mass. Don't worry if you don't know any particle physics - I didn't have a clue before I started, but you pick it up along the way. It's very interesting, I recommend it if you can choose that topic.
