It's an instinctive throwback to the days when a wild hen would cover her nest to hide it from predators. Many ducks and geese will cover their nests every time they lay an egg.

A couple of my girls will hunker down when I enter their pen. Sorta squat. Good time to give them some love, but what's it' all about? Are they being submissive?
