I know this might not be in the right place but it is chicken behavior so I decided to put it here. while in the coop today I witnessed a behavior I have never seen before with my own eyes, my 4 month old RIR roo mounted one of my 15 month old EEs. I had never seen it before but knew the time was approaching, even though he has yet to crow. so I came in and told DH about it, and suggested we started checking her eggs for fertility because we think our RIR mix hen is trying to go broody, as she will sit in the nest during the day on a golf ball, until I make her get out. and I don't think she has laid an egg in a while. I tried to cage her and observe her, but as she is the alpha hen, no one knew what to do with out her doing it first (no one would go roost so I had to let her out)

anyways back to the topic I started with, so my DS (7 y.o.) goes outside to play for a while and then comes in laughing histerically and says, "Mom you will never guess what the chickens were doing??!!"

I knew exactly what he was about to say, but I laughed and asked him what they were doing. and he said, "Elvis (our RIR roo) jumped on top of Pepper's (our EE hen) back and then Pepper flung him off up into the air, and then chased him and pecked at him until they got into the coop." all while laughing at the act he just witnessed. so I look at DH and

realized the "talk" will be coming soon. so we told him that they must be playing leap frog or some kind of chicken game, and he accepts that as the answer. so we go outside to check on the girls and spend some time with them.....and once we go in the coop, DH sees the act as well (DS isn't in there at this time). so maybe we will let our RIR hen set on a couple of eggs and see what happens. just thought I would share a funny story of our roos becoming ROOSTERS!! lol thanks for reading

...let me tell ya bout the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees and the sky up above... and a roo playing leap frog!
