FunnyBunnies12(Missy) Duckling Thread!

Ok, this means you can open the hatcher without endangering the others to much. The ones that have externally pipped are in danger. Take the babies out and put them into the hatcher. Check on the ones that had rocked by holding them to your ear. You may have to pip them, not the rocking ones.

It's also hard to see the entire air sac side of all 3 eggs because of how much they have been moved and knocked around. I could attempt to put a long thin stick to see if it reaches and try to reposition them so that I can see the larger side to look for external pips. On 13, there is one darker spot I've been watching yesterday that seems to be thinning but I'm not sure. I keep telling myself, it's only day 27. But why would the other 2 that hatched 14 & 19, pip before 13, 16 and 19?

There are no more that have externally pipped. It's just the 3(13,16,18) we are waiting on to externally pip. I will get the brooder heated up, vitamins/electrolites made, and food I either will have to use the Dumor Chick Starter/Grower, or the 16% adult food for strong eggs. Now when I put them in the brooder, and fill the water, I take their bills and gently dip them into the water??

You just dip them once into the water and lift their head. Use their bill kind of like a spoon. Don't worry to much about the nostrils they clear them right away, and it is just water. You can have a little bit of food mash ready, but don't make to much. 2 Tablespoons worse is more then enough. Give them the chick started, if it is unmedicated. I would not give them the layer mix, because it does contain oyster shell.

BTW do not by more layer feed, it is not good for the drake. Get the grower/developer and offer oyster shell on the side.

Well I'm probably pretty sure #13 didn't make it, I put a stethoscope on them and there really isn't anything that I'm hearing just air flow in #13, but I did hear things and a chirp in both 16 & 18, so should I attempt to open up #13 or at least start a hole?? But I did notice the same thing as last last weeks egg, cooling rather quickly, but I had it out longer then the other 2 trying to listen to something, at 1st I thought I hear a peep in the incubator, but it may have been the babies in the brooder that I was hearing. I may try again, but something is again telling me to assist 13.

You are sometimes confusing with all the numbers. The ones that were rocking should stay in the incubator without interaction. The others that have previously rocked and stopped are the ones I would pip right now. It's just strange that so many didn't pip. I'm back to thinking that they are having the same issue as the first egg. So there may be a genetic problem with the mother duck, and half of the egg got it.

BTW you sometimes hear more just holding them to your ear.

I peeled off all the wax and glue from the dented egg, there is so many distant background noises even in the quiest places that I'm having a hard time. But I think I still hear something very faint like very tiny peck or maybe it's my tendons. My neighbor decides to mow when all is quiet.

As far as the other 2, I hear things inside that make me think all is well, they haven't chirped or peeped or rocked yet, well maybe a slight peep. So considering it's only day 27 I'm going to hold off doing anything with those two (18& 19) the last 3 to be laid, but 13, I feel like I must follow my gut last time I ignored it the duckling died. Didn't you say that within 24-48hrs of internal pip they MUST externally pip or they will suffercate? If that is correct and I do make a external pip I should give it late tonight to see whta progresses?

I don't like to hear internal pip from you, it kind of scares me. Because the bill going up and down is not an internal pip. The internal pip is when they move into the air sack completely. Lets go from when they started to rock, because then we know for sure they have internally piped. Forget the candling. So from their first rocking they should pip the shell within 24 hours. Those are the only egg should consider piping manually at this point. Remember that there is sometimes a reason why they can do it. Usually they are to weak or something else may be wrong. These eggs may be like the first egg that did not make it.

:hitOk, within the last 1/2hr since I examined them one of the eggs, there are 3 left due to hatch, eggs 13, 16, 18. One of them is now chirping on the inside, so it's either 16 or 18. I just opened 13 up, I led candled 13, and sure enough Katharina, you were right, 13 didn't absorb the yolk, and it's head and bill as last weeks baby was deformed. But, we now have 16& 18 left to root onto hatching, if I can get 4 out of 5 babies born/hatched normally with normal body structures I'd say I did good! So, waiting on 16&18 now to externally pip and hope for the best. Leaving them alone now until what will be! Lucky 13 wasn't so lucky.
