“The kindness of my heart, of course!” Riski said, a charming smile curving across his beak.
“Mhm,” Russet said, eying Riski suspiciously. Smiling gallantly was his job. “More like trying to escape an assassination. What, you trying to get your claws into our gang business just like you did with the gulls? And I suppose having that limp french fry of a leader was your idea. See how that turned out. Well let me tell you!” Passion filled his crop, suffused over his features. “You might find that trait among the gulls, I can’t speak for them. But I think you’re going to find that pigeons aren’t so... impressionable.”
Riski’s smile gradually morphed into a frown throughout Russet’s monologue, his gape crawling down his face like a handlebar mustache. Because Russet had read him like a book. He hit a very tender wound. And he was none too gentle about it.
Russet became suddenly aware of his mortal danger. On one side, very large bird that he had upset. On the other, Cement who he had probably upset too. He wasn’t sure which was worse.
You stuck your foot in it this time, Russet, he thought.
Russet literally swallowed his pride. He became quite a bit smaller without his cocksure crop puffed up. “I mean... er... sorry. Thank you so much for saving my life.”
Riski definitely would have face palmed if not for his airborne state. He also sort of wanted to drown the impertinent orange pigeon. You guys aren’t worth the effort, he thought, not seeming to remember his help was entirely voluntary.

Cement tried to subtly shake her head at Russet as he scolded a possible ally, but he didn’t look at her until it was too late. Looking at Riski, she was worried that they’d already blown it, and he would go back to fleeing to whatever distant land he had come from. Though she had to admit to herself that Russet’s assessment of character seemed pretty spot on. A tinge of pride rose in her chest for her mate, so often underestimated by their enemies.

Cement fixed her gaze back on Riski. Now was not the time to think about Russet’s scarily accurate insults. Now was the time to prepare for government overthrowing.

“We could be a valuable ally to you.” She said firmly, staring directly at Riski. “One gull isn’t going to stop the coup.”

Rocket shrugged and looked away. She gestured to a patch of tall grass with one wing.
“Let’s check that for seeds.” She said.

Rocket stuck her beak clumsily under a clump of grass. Feeling something touching her beak, her eyes widened with excitement. She grabbed it greedily and yanked it out, just to see-
“A bug!”
Rocket’s frightful coo was higher pitched than usual. She practically threw herself backwards, the insect, a small beetle, getting thrown into the air.

One gull isn't going to stop the coup. Riski turned the words over in his head, trying to decipher their meaning. One gull? he glanced at himself. Oh. Chuckled. The coo? No the coup.
Riski began laughing hysterically.
"I think he's gone cuckoo," muttered Russet.
This released another tirade of laughter. Riski lost several feet of altitude. "COO COO! COO COO!" he screamed through gasps of laughter.

Cement simply watched Riski in silence. She clenched her beak, irritation building up in her chest.
During a stretch of silence between the albatross’ laughter, wherein the huge bird appeared to be struggling to breath, Cement spoke.
“Though it may not affect you, wanderer.” She cooed, her quiet tone as icy as the waves below, “Pigeons have died for this. And more will die in the future.” Her eyes bore into him, “Whatever our plans are to you, they aren’t a laughing matter.”
