fuzzi's Chicken Journal

:hugsI'm so sorry to hear about Joel, I know he meant a lot to you.

The loss of the feathers when he was thrashing about may have just been the body's response due to stress, the release of feathers can happen during a stressful event.
That's what comes to mind first hand anyway.

Sounds like he may have not been feeling up to par for a little while. It can be so hard to know why they decline without necropsy.

Could have been a heart defect. I suddenly lost a cockerel a few years back, he was fine, then just wasn't. Gone within an hour or so. I did take a look, the only thing I saw off was the heart looked damaged. Still sad though.

I appreciate your information and support. :hugs

Samuel is getting better at being Da Boss. He's not tidbiting, not yet, but he does let the girls know of something tasty, which he then eats along with them.

He'll get there.

Keep'em coming, gals!

I have been trying to arrange an appointment for my dh with his neurologist. This afternoon I was in my kitchen preparing some cooked chicken for the flock when my phone rang. One brief discussion and two return phone calls later my husband had an appointment in February 🥳🥳🥳 but it was getting dark outside. I headed for the coop anyway, with the treats just in case the chickens hadn't roosted yet.

No birds were in sight as I approached, they all were already up on the roost. However, as I stopped in front of the door there was a little twittering, then a flapping explosion of feathered piranhas hurtled my way.

The flock devoured the bits of meat as I retrieved one egg, put crushed eggshells in the calcium cup, and topped off the waterers.

Martha came up to me, pecked my skirt and made a querying noise.

"Sorry, that's all."

The Dominiques then headed back to the roost followed shortly by the Sussex.

Just that little interaction made my day.

Pretty egg from the MIDDLE nest...a new layer, perhaps?

The egg is beautiful!
Love to have the interactions with the little feathery friends.

Just a heads up, I made a post/announcement, but sometimes folks don't see...

Robitussin Recall due to Microbial Contamination. Check your meds ya'll!

Thanks. I have texted that link to my sisters and my daughter.

Yesterday I picked some looseleaf lettuce that's been growing well under the row covers. I sat down on my coop chair and offered it to the girls. They were stripping the leaves down to the ribs. I had one left, in my left hand but held high while I was concentrating on the right hand...when Martha leaped straight up, snatched the leaf from my left hand, and took off with it! :gig

She said, "Finders keepers! Mine all mine!" 😂

Martha is a stinker!😂
She's funny. I love how she queries me, gently pecking my skirt. I believe she's also the head hen. No one pecks HER. She doesn't peck others much, they all part and make room for her.

Martha and Joel at 4 weeks ⬆️

Rahab appears to be second hen, she feels it necessary to peck others, even chasing them a little. Hannah's been quiet lately, I think she's missing Joel. They'd roost together.
