Lately when I check the nests the straw is rearranged, the fake egg is pushed to the side, and there's often some noticeable warmth, though no real egg. I think the pullets are practicing, two of the three have bigger red combs forming.

I did not take a picture of Johanna yesterday, but her comb was looking redder...

Yesterday the brown paper bag monster went inside the hoop coop, and the flock panicked and scattered to the farthest reaches of their territory. Only Zacchaeus remained near the deadly threat, freaking out and almost getting stuck behind the waterer.
:gig

I'd like to think he stayed behind to do battle with the bag, but then he must have lost his nerve.

It's lurking to the right of the can ⬆️

Not the dreaded paper bag monster!:lau

Chickens are so funny.

This morning I decided to rake up some of the feather explosion in the runs. Bucket, rake, broom - we've ALL seen these things for a few years now.
NOPE, never seen these things in our lives!!!
Scary, run for your life cackling, flapping, jumping and chaos.

Suddenly it dawns on them, hey that's the thing that scratches dirt, let's help...🤣

Speaking of feathers...

I've been feeding some supplemental protein to the flock to help their molts. Today I had leftovers from work: shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, and...shredded cheese!

Wow, all ELEVEN of them in one shot!

Zacchaeus observes his gals enjoy the extras. Silas usually just stuffs his beak, but here he appears to be watching as well. Hmm.

Priscilla and Esther on either side of Hannah, who is cranky. I saw Silas get chased by Hannah, and she's the groupie hen! He'd better mind his manners.

Martha is also fowl tempered 😉 and was preventing others from roosting this evening. I slid her to the end of the roost and put Silas next to her. He was not pleased about it, but after giving him a couple pecks, Martha settled down. Next I placed two pullets on the roost, spoke quietly to Zacchaeus and then placed him in the remaining spot. None of them fussed, they were actually more relaxed about me playing chicken Tetris than in the past.
