fuzzi's Chicken Journal

I have tried eating kale that I bought at the grocery store, but I did not care for it. I planted the arugula to see if I liked it. Nope.

Thanks for stopping by. :hugs
I LOVE arugula. I used to think arugula is one of the best thing that America has offered me :lau. I like kale too. I pretty much like all greens. I have to lightly saute them.

It's all gone, now, but you're welcome to whatever I grow in the future!

On the left is a Sussex egg, the first one laid since 11/17, just over a month!

Same as here in the UK then, just with different names.

Curly kale (Scotland wants nothing to do with it, thanks - we have far nicer varieties!) is the most widely available, so no wonder so many people think they don't like kale. My chickens won't touch it! And the supermarket stuff is always full of woody stems just to make it even worse. Dinosaur kale is what I'd call black kale; usually sold as cavolo nero. Much nicer but the stuff in shops can still be very variable.

Shetland, Sutherland and some of the flatter-leaved Red Veined Russian varieties are some of my favourites to grow. The immature flower stems are really crisp and sweet, eaten straight off the plant or just very lightly steamed or fried.
I bought some Red Russian kale to plant next year. It should grow well in the field as long as it doesn't get dried out. I've given up on spinach. It always bolts.:(

I don't recall ours having them. When they found an opening in the chicken wire around the garden a couple of summers ago, they mowed the kale down and picked at every tomato they could reach.
I don't know what's wrong with the field lot, they don't get tomatoes. I've grown cherry tomatoes on my patch and the chickens completely ignore them. The tribes in Catalonia would strip a tomato plant of everything they could reach.

Even curly Kale is okay if one fries it in garlic and olive oil until its crisp. It can be done in a dry cast iron pan if one wants to avoid the oil.
