Dominiques!

The big chicks (Sussex) are intrigued and hop on top of the grate to watch. Most of the Dominiques run back into the brooder except for one, who keeps eating. Once the Sussex lose interest and leave the Dominiques run back into their play yard and resume eating.

We had torrential rain last night.

See the wet line, just in front of the roost?

The Sussex finally roosted overnight on top of the A frame on their own! The top is dry, as is the straw underneath. Feeder on the right remained dry, too. Good!

Dominiques came out once I offered some fresh mash/mush in their play yard.

"Can you come out and play?"

Controlled burn? (Very common here in the Sandhills).

Those storms yesterday were remarkably strong. Hope you came through well.

We're fine, just very wet!

No hail, no strong winds. I am thankful.

The burn in Croatan is a "wildfire" of unknown origin as per the news. Hopefully the rain helped with containment.

The litter in the open area in the hoop coop was a little flat and still damp yesterday when I got home from work, so I took out the mower and did the area behind the coop where it was getting tall. I dumped the entire bag of clippings in the run, happy chicks!

And some of the cockerels decided to be friendly, including bad boy "Red/purple":

I was talking with a coworker this morning, showed her photos of the chicks. She mentioned that she has three retired RIR hens who occasionally give her an egg. She offered to take a cockerel because she likes having a rooster around.

The cockerels are now 8 weeks, think rehoming one now would be okay? Any suggestions, thoughts?

I've never tried introducing a young cockerel to a flock of mature hens, but it might be easier to get through the see-don't-touch now while he's young than later when he's hormonal and they're having nothing of it.
