fuzzi's Chicken Journal

That's good.

It is still always so disappointing to me. Sad.
I have a meany right now too. He could have it made as a rooster's life goes. There are about 24 hens out there but he is penned alone.
He is a beautiful boy but can't be trusted. I cannot enjoy my flock watching my back.
Too bad you cannot reason with them.

Their bird brains are fogged with hormones. :barnie

Joel has been good to the girls so far, but I will not tolerate sneak attacks. He needs to stop.

Samuel is patiently waiting for his opportunity, and is actually closer to the Standard for breeding.

They're both almost 8 months old.

Before I added the chopped leaves:

The deep litter is continuously composting. ⬆️

So I added a mower bag of chopped leaves.

And then I noticed...

...those little dickens...they got underneath the shower curtain and into the fresh straw!

(see top left of photo)

I tucked the plastic back and put a clay pot on top to hold it temporarily.

You just can't trust the children to not mess with things!

Update:
  • Joel's been behaving
  • Girls continue to provide 2-3 eggs daily
  • We have added more leaves to the run
Saw a brown snake behind the run this evening while walking the dog. I picked it up (about 6" long, size of a pencil) to admire it, but when I put it down it went into the run. They eat insects, no worries.

"Treat" tray! (grape bits, pear cores, a little shredded cheese)

Rahab is making sure she gets her share!
She's being bossy, but not to Martha, the lighter Sussex slightly behind and to her right. Martha's the big girl, no one messes with her.

Rahab also follows me around, yakking, but in a friendly manner.
