fuzzi's Chicken Journal

And.... we're up to SEVEN!!!
:th

I moved Rahab and her bunch into the A-frame brooder, the chicks were already making forays outside the nesting box.

:love

I'm going to set up the other brooder this afternoon, for Tamar and the remaining chicks. The chick in her nest that was zipping this morning had hatched, and strayed, and got stuck between the plastic fencing and the side of the wheelbarrow. It's back underneath Tamar but looks like it got a scrape/scratch.

It and the incubator yellow will be Tamar's. I think Rahab will have her work cut out for her with five. Martha did.

Speaking of Martha, I think the chick noises are making her broody... she's wandering around the coop making loud noises!

I am blessed. I never expected to get this many hatches from shipped eggs!

They are just lovely. What a bunch of happy mommas and babies!! Congratulations!!

I put the last incubator chick in with Tamar.

She looks a bit bedraggled, not fluffed up yet. I hope she looks better in the morning.
Here's her sibling and foster mom:

I removed the three remaining eggs from Tamar's nest. They're in the incubator with the two that didn't hatch, but I am fairly certain that none of the unhatched eggs are alive. I candled and didn't see anything encouraging:

⬆️ Blood ring?

Dud?

I think those two are ready to pitch, and Tamar's three, but I am going to give them another day.

Sunday Morning

Looking better this morning. I dipped their beaks in the waterer and feeder. Tamar is still acting as if she's on eggs.

Rahab has skipped the nesting box option, made a new nest in the straw. She looks like an old pro.

Not the clearest image, but Martha has officially kicked her brood to the curb. If any of them get too close she gives them a peck that is enough to make them squeal.

And Blue is looking more like a boy... :hit

Maybe not. My speckled sussex hen developed wattles when she was about the same size as blue.
