fuzzi's Chicken Journal

Today I realized I had run out of oyster shell flakes in the run, so I went into the shed to get some more. The new unopened box was in a paper bag, to catch spillage. As I pulled the box of flakes out of the bag I heard a scurrying sound. Inside the bag was a thumb-sized brown roach (they live outside here). I brought the bag into the run, called "Chick chick chick!" and as the hens came running I dumped the roach out of the bag.

STAMPEDE!!!

One of the Dominiques got the roach and managed to evade the others, went in the back of the run to savor her prize in private...

Look!!! First time!!!

Naomi and Tamar were blocked from the main roost by Abigail, so they settled on the A-frame. In the past if hens were on the A-frame roost Zacchaeus used a perch over by the door. Last night he roosted with them, and didn't act scared.

He's growing up.

This afternoon, after work I headed out to the coop despite the heat.

The waterer needed to be filled, but it was green inside. Some white vinegar and the liberal use of a toothbrush cleaned it up nicely.

I leave the toothbrush inside, as I can't think of a better and cleaner place to store it!

The chicks enjoyed fresh COOL water.

In typical cockerel fashion Silas gets first dibs.

Joanna and Silas

They're almost 10 weeks old!

The older pair is 2 years old, the younger pair one. Looks like there won't be any any new hens this year though. I was hoping Little Mama would go broody again this year and I would get a chance to stick some eggs under her, but it's getting late now.
I thought you hatched some eggs. Did Leia and Luke turn out to both be boys?
