fuzzi's Chicken Journal

Thank you!

The problem is I go back to work on Monday, and the 2x daily on the Nystatin is going to be extremely difficult.
Just do the best you can. If you can only give once daily, then I'd extend the treatment period for a couple of days.

Update

Sunday 9am

Lydia was still resting under the wheelbarrow. Her crop was hard but after about 15 seconds of massage I could feel it going down. I gave her the meds, but she wasn't interested in taking tomato bits from my fingers. I put her in the brooder with fresh water, tomato bits, and a plate of her usual chicken (chick) crumbles. I'll check on her after we get home from church.

I totally understand. Do the best you can.
I wonder if you could add a tiny bit of coconut oil or olive oil in the feed you leave while your at work?
Although, I don't know how fast it would turn rancid in the heat??

Could she possibly have had a bit to eat before you got there? Maybe she had a tiny bit of feed in her crop? Good it was moving down.

Don't get discouraged. You are doing great!!

You are still giving the coconut oil too, right?

No, I stopped that, as I was cautioned here about syringing oil into her mouth. I then began feeding her eggs with coconut oil.

She then refused eggs with oil, and I thought the stool softener was replacing the oil.

Today Lydia didn't eat anything I left for her. When I let her out after church she got a drink from the waterer, then went under the wheelbarrow again. I offered her moistened feed, and a couple grape bits, she wouldn't touch them.

This afternoon I tried giving Lydia some beaten egg yolk mixed with coconut oil, even dipped her beak in the mixture. Nope. So I used a syringe to put some in the left side of her mouth (?). She swallowed it. I repeated that a couple times. Then I started stroking her and she closed her eyes. I really thought she was going to pass on my lap. After about 20 minutes she opened her eyes and acted as if she wanted to get down. I put her down, she steadied herself with her wings, then walked slowly over to the wheelbarrow and settled underneath, where she was earlier.

I don't know what else to do.

Oh I am so sorry that you are dealing with crop issues. It can be quite frustrating.

Did you discard the stool softener capsule and squeeze out the content and gave it to Lydia? I learned the hard way not to feed the whole capsule...

Did she have any egg laying issues? (underlying condition)

We have dealt with crop issues extensively at this point... DH and I have also read so many threads on crop issues. So many of them are like what you are experiencing: tried so many things including coconut oil, stool softener, acidified copper sulphate and no success. But one day all of a sudden, after so many weeks, the crop magically cleared... sometimes it coincides with right after deworming.

So I know how frustrated you are. Take a deep breath and be patient.

We have noticed they always really like watermelon with crop problems because they need a lot of liquid to flush out the crop. So it is important to keep Lydia hydrated. Perhaps offer her watermelon again.

I recommend you try slippery elm. Last summer our hen Light had a persistent case of impacted crop and we drove 2 hours to Raleigh hoping for a crop surgery. The vet did other things instead and prescribed a few things including slippery elm. She got better very soon after that. This summer she got impacted crop again (likely due to molting, her crop tends to slow during molt) and we just went to a co-op and bought slippery elm. And it worked again! Coincidentally, we dewormed the whole flock the day before we fed Light slippery elm so it could have been the dewormer (live roundworm was found in Light's poop.)

I wish you good luck and keep us posted. Make sure she is hydrated.

edited to add: this is what we bought in a health food store locally. But any powder should do. I can specify the dosage if you decide to give it a try.

I usually just give small hardened chunks of coconut oil, if they don't eat it, I pop the pieces into the beak.

I give the stool softener whole, it doesn't have to be squeezed out, the outer coating is just a gel coating, it will dissolve quickly once in the crop.

Is her eye dialated? Just asking. You don't see lice/mites right?

The only other thing I can suggest is to try a flush to see if that gets things moving. 1teaspoon Epsom salts to 1/2cup warm water tubed directly into the crop 2x a day for three days. If you can't do 2x a day, then do once.

Of course, asking other's suggestions is always encouraged, all I can recommend is what has worked for me and a few others I have helped. If azygous is on, you may want to give her a shout and see if she has better suggestions. She is very good with crop issues and another set of eyes to look at symptoms/photos and what you have done so far may see something I or others have missed.

Yes, her eye was dilated.

I'm getting ready for work, will reply more as I am able.

Thank you, both.
