fuzzi's Chicken Journal

Occasionally the older hens try to slip out as I enter the coop. When I went on vacation I wanted something to contain the hens in case there was a stray cat or other predator nearby, or to just help the chicken sitter catch their charges. I tried some plastic fencing which didn't stay up well.

Today's solution:

That's pool fence. It had metal extensions that I pushed into the soil. To make it a little sturdier I inserted short T-bar posts next to the fencing posts. There was a small gap at the side of the coop, but I added a small piece of plastic chicken fencing.

It's always evolving, isn't it?

There is always something to tweak, it seems! That pool fencing is a really good idea and looks like it will assist both you and chicken helpers in maintaining law and order!

What a great crow!
I think he has been secretly practicing and now decided to show off his stuff.
And he was getting some "sugar" this afternoon, with one of the older hens. That's a first. Until today all I've witnessed is his attempts of amour being rebuffed. ;)

Thank you.

More tweaking today...

I have a rain barrel by the coop, to use for rinsing and filling waterers. As I was trying to rinse and fill my supplemental waterer this afternoon I noted how much water was spilled from the rain barrel faucet.

I fixed it!

The best rooster I've ever had was raised by mature hens. I felt sorry for him at first when they ignored his wing dancing. It wasn't long before he earned his way. I never had any problems out of him. He passed at around 7 years old. I miss him.

Good to hear.

Maybe his new-found crow got their attention?
;)

Thank you.

Another innovation! Is that a washing machine hose?
