Howdy all,
I did a straight-run oriental assortment order of 25 chicks from Ideal a few weeks ago. I thought it would be interesting to add a few different looks to the group. today 26 fuzzy butts arrives. the order says 21 Malay, 4 Blue-Red Cubalaya. Well, so it isn't TOO assorted, but hey, the price was great. They included the blue goo gel stuff for the chicks. Most are a cocoa brown color with a few "chipmunk" colored chicks. the 5 white and nearly white chicks are probably the cubalaya. they are much smaller. These chicks were in great condition and immediately headed to the food and water troughs (room temp of course). For couple day old chicks they are quite lively! Anyway, kudos to Ideal Poultry for getting the chicks here safe and sound and I look forward to figuring out what to do with all these Malays. They get big, right?

Congrats!!! I got 17 Black JG's from Ideal. They emailed me at 6pm Tues. And the PO called me at 9am WEDs. It really pays to live close to the hatchery! LOL

They added 3 BO roos as P-nuts. They are SOOOooo Sweet!!!
Good Luck and God Bless!

Sounds like you don`t have much experience with orientals. The breeds you just got are all gamefowl. At some point, probably by 6 mos of age, they will cease to play well with each other. It`s good you are looking foreward to dealing with them as all the males will need to be penned alone after they "turn on". That`s a lot of seperate pens. Better get busy........Pop

Pop,
I have just a few orientals but I have American gamefowl (Grays, White Hatch, Radio) so I am well aware of the fighting spirit that may spring up. The nastiest, orneriest chicken I ever had is a barred rock cross! I have a 1 acre field that we are fencing in for some semi-free ranging. It has 48" welded wire and chicken wire on the bottom and will have electic on the top. I will see how they do in there initially. I know I will be culling most of the roos anyway as Ideal's games are said to be fairly distant from standard. Hope to get 2-3 good roos. Will probably keep all the pullets if not as breeders, then as layers and ornamental dinosaur chickens! The Malay is said to be less game than the Thais/shamo/Asil so we will see. I will post some chick pics later.
