Fuzzy's Farm

Well here in WA its 50's and 60's and chickens "coat" is looking shiny actually, and with no feathers on the ground or in the coop... I just dont see molting. Regarding an egg theif. Well usually my wife lets the chickens out of the coop around 8am and there are eggs already in the nest boxes. So the coop is secured and inside the coop the would be thief would have to be a ninja to jump up the 2ft to the ledge before it could even get inside the nest boxes. Run shows no signs of forced entry from Possums, or Raccoons. no foreign droppings. I would like to think BOB the rooster wouldnt tolerate a mouse... but maybe.Coop is wide open 6ft x 3ft I mukked it out thinking hidden nest... no dice. I also searched the run (10ft x 12ft) which doesnt have any hiding places.. not even an egg shell. Almost makes me wonder if someone is sneaking in our yard for free eggs.

May be a two legged thief.. And yes we are proud to get more space, but won't be turning our travel trailer into coop,,, lol cost too much. We paid four times as much for it as we did trailer we bought. We have two full RV hookups we installed on the property, so we will just put it there and have it for company. I'm having rooster problems. My big rooster is being overly romantic with the hens. Thought he had killed Lucy this morning, thought her neck was broke. He chased her all over then cornered her in coop did his business very roughly. Then she just fell over and layed there thought she was dead. So I got the broom went into coop chased him out she still layed there. Got to her and she finally got up and ran out. Apparently just shook up. No blood that I found on her. Is this normal Nova? Know you are our chicken Behavior expert. But I'm wondering what happened? Any input?

Yup... A very amorous roo. Florus was getting that way right at the beginning of spring. I was very tempted to make him into dumplings. Some days I still am. He was litterally grabbing the girls as they'd try and get into the run and coop for the night. Was making for a very stressful roost time. I had to chase him off several times. Even catch him and lock him in his coop while the others would get to their coop. Well anyway, yes, have had the hens he was molesting just lay their afterwards. I think it is a total submission... If they don't move for a few minutes, he'll go away and leave them be. If they did move, Florus would grab em again! Well anyway, he's not really doing that anymore. I think it was just a raging hormone thing. BUT he was close to losing his ability to breathe there for a bit.

I think, as long as he's not damaging the hens, which Florus wasn't, and he's not attacking your or the kids(grandkids), then I'd just watch him. Lock him up if you have to in a naughty pen. I have done that to Florus too. Works like a charm to give the others a chance to relax. But, I also have several roos, and one in particular will kick the crap out of Florus when he gets to big for his fluffy butt. LOL.

OK! Picture spam time!

I can't hardly wait for those blue ones (technically they are silvers) to finish coloring and filling in. They look so AWESOME!

yES, OK??????!

I got on here because i heard the news on my way to work this morning. :(

My beautiful henry is getting a major attitude problem lately too. :( He would tolerate petting before, but i mostly left him to his own devices since he seemed happy to be near but not coddled; he was so gentle i thought perhaps that would keep him this way. Now that i don't have time to be there when they get to range, and their range time is cut down from me working, he's getting nervous and aggressive towards me. He's spurred a few times, and if i corner him he outright freaks and pinches. I've knocked him silly a couple times, but trying hard to do the patient approach. They are also still picking at each other's feathers, i've never had this happen before! I even switched to purina laying pellets in the hope it's dietary. Any ideas? They have plenty of space, especially when the underside of the camper is open as well. A two level condo?

Some days i just wanna give up and go roosterless.

Saw there was another tornado through there. Hope the girls in OK are ok, too. Thinking about it, didn't Gigi say they were getting ready to go on vacation a few days ago?

Fuzzy, can't help you on Henry, but our Ruby is getting that way, too. DS has knocked him a few times and he seemed to be better, but today he went after me. I was going out to take care of the mama and chick and had just spread out a bunch of seeds for the rest of the group so that I could get across the yard without getting tripped up by them. I knew where he was and thought he was occupied getting the seeds so I didn't watch closely and when I rounded the garden fence, he came flying up behind me. Caught me completely by surprise. I cursed the little bugger and threw the scoop at him (totally missed). Anyway, we were in a stand off because I knew from his attitude and stance that if I tried to smack him he would've attacked. But guess what! Neil, passive scared-e-cat Neil, came flying around the fence and nailed Ruby and chased him off. It was awesome. It's nice to know my boys will protect me like that. Needless to say, Neil got a very nice thank you.

LOL, I am so glad that at this point I have only had to deal with the neighbors roos. The neighbor has been so impressed with my roos that he's wondering how in the hello I got such nice boys when he keeps getting glass moles. I don't know. I do know that I wouldn't let glass moles breed though. Florus is very lucky he's not a people attacker at this point, and very lucky that his attitude has seriously improved lately towards the girls, the rapist.

Yes, I think she did say something about that. She's in Norman isn't she? Or near abouts there? Such bad weather they are having near OK City... I just read that a 4 yr old was swept away in a flash flood...
