Fuzzy's Farm

Hi everyone,
Nova sorry about Pat. And for your crapsman in the fall my DH hangs a couple of moth ball cakes under the hood of his Cub Cadet. Have yet to have a critter problem.
Most everything is going okay here. Just rooster poor put on CL and no one wants roo's. I don't care if they go to freezer camp most are mutts anyway but I figured someone would want them for dinner. I just don't want to mess with the process. They are eating me out of house and home!
I am having a problem with my hens. My eggs for the last couple of months have been in the tubes for the most part. Most of the eggs I get the whites are runny and the yolk will break as soon as it hits the pan. (Can't sell eggs that do that.) I feed Layena and they free range from about 10 in the morning till they go to roost. Also free choice oyster shell. The coop door is open so they have access to the feed if they want it. I had thought maybe bugs so about 3 weeks ago I did the Ivermec pour on. This did not help eggs quality. Poo is normal. I have been looking on BYC and finding some people with the same problem (mostly runny whites) but no one seems to know what is going on with them. Thought I would pick some of your brains on this.
Thanks.

Hey Rusty...

Try a different brand of feed. I am using starter/grower for all my birds, even the layers with free choice calcium on the side. The boys don't need the calcuim anyway. I have had eggs that break also as soon as they hit the pan, and I have chalked that up to heat. I just did a worming not so long ago cuz I had a hen who was ill and when I was holding her, set her in the cage in the house, she was crawling with lice/mites. Poor thing. SO, they ALL got a treatment regardless if they were crawling or not. Anyway, I still have the random egg that seems a bit looser than the others and breaks easy. I don't know why. Tastes fine when cooked.

Have you googled the question? Might be you find an answer faster there, even if it is on another forum. This one has gotten so hard to get right to the answer you are looking for because the answer will be in an unspecific thread that's hundreds of pages, thousands of answers, and it's like picking a needle out of hay stack, then half the time you only find the same question you have, but no answer. Gah! Yeah.

Lost my little awkward jap bantam last night. This is the one that i posted that looked like it had no feet. Just cute as can be. But as she feathered out, and grew, she didn't grow like her siblings, her tail was cocked over to the side, and when she walked both her belly and her wings up high were dragging the ground. She just wasn't developing right, period. Bummer that, but the others are doing remarkably well. They are now allowed out of their brooder and able to explore. So cute to see them all piled up in a dust bath hole. The faverolles chick never leaves their side either, nor the silkie chick.

Gigi... I have been pondering your question... I am not sure what I would do, but I do expect that I will be talking to my neighbor soon, and I do expect that I have friends enough here that would come and take care of the birds should I end up not able to for medical reasons, and get them rehomed should I pass away. I can not say that I haven't thought about it at all, I have chosen to not really think about it as I am only nearing 40, but nothing is certain in this life, but I'd hope that I wouldn't be in a position to have to deal with that anytime soon. I would hope that my boys would be grown up before that happens and know if they're going to keep them or not.

Rusty, I have that problem now and then, too. Never thought anything about it. Just thought that the yolk was getting cut open from the egg shell. Perhaps Nova is right and it's a heat thing.

I also have pondered that question Nova. So I have set it up with friends as to who gets what birds and I have their names and numbers all written down so that if something did happen my family knows who to call about my birds. All except my Sebastopol's. I have not spoken to Gail about that yet but I'm sure she would take them.

Thanks for all your thoughts. Although we have lots of friends and family, none of them are inclined to be minifarmers -- or would even know what to do with animals. I've got to do a lot of research on this. DH has hepatitis which may or may not be getting into his liver. We are keeping our fingers crossed and praying that the biopsy is okay. I feel like I have this fist clinching m heart.

Sorry to be such a bummer. Hopefully all will be well. Regardless, I would always stay out here but then what if something happens to me? geesh. Definitely am retiring at Christmas and may be going sooner depending on what tests show.

The animals are a blessing. I go out and sit and stress melts away.

The small chicks are laying. Tiny eggs that are so cute.

Gigi... Wow, hope it turns out well. My uncle just passed away from liver cancer a few weeks ago, he had hepititis also for over 35 years. It can be slow and well managed, but so many people do not know what it can actually do to a person over time, especially when outwardly the person is very health conscience... Will cross the fingers and send up a prayer.

I find my birds to be relaxing also.

I just switched to blue seal finish, they are tiny pellets instead of crumbles. The birds thought it was massive treat time! LOL. I threw out a few hand fulls just to get them to leave me alone while trying to fill the multiple feeders. The only feeder I didn't have to fill yet was the one in the garage, it's only about half way down, so I am happy to see that food is going farther. LOL. The neighbors wee birds were always raiding my feeders. I think they like my wee birds feed much better. It's not the cheep $11 bags, though I must admit, when you're budget its tight from everything going wrong at once, that sum is on occasion a blessing. I tried the blue seal starter for last weeks feed, just because there was that heat, and it was higher in protien. They seemed to like that too. I am going to have to get that again in 2 weeks when the babies under the broody duo and Criptoe hatch...

Ah... the broody duo... Hawkarella and Ekta... Hawk is new to the brooding thing. LOL Ekta hasn't quit, but she sure does eat, so her weight is staying good.

And my pin cushion...

You can see where all the feathers were ripped out, and where the skin is still pink on her wing where it was ripped open,a nd on her back where it was ripped off. It not as tissue thin anymore and it is starting to look like chicken skin. I hope it grows feathers too. She's got pins sticking out of her butt too where the tail is growing back. The feathers don't look like they are going to come back in all white though... And her cheek muffs and beard are still rather missing... But I am so happy she's recovered and filling back in nicely.

As to runny eggs mine are sometimes too. I've found that I mix my feed with lay pellets, crumbles, and chick grower with scratch. I mix it all together and feed my laying hens they seem to be thriving on that and are laying well. Worth a try? Mobile home is coming along, got both bedrooms living room and bathroom all sheet rocked. Now got to finish it up with the drywall. Man did all three rooms for 120.00 very cheap! Did it as a favor. Hope everyone's doing great. Have good day
