Fuzzy's Farm

ok nova, did a search and yes, scaley mites CAN make toes fall off if bad enough; so if the toes are black and falling off it's frostbite, and if it's just scaley toes falling off it's the mites.

If it's the mites i know it'll make their feet feathers a mess, but do the medicated dip in my siggy but use the olive oil, then literally dip the feet! I'd use an old towel to sponge off the extra. Olive oil will condition the feet feathers and make them more flexible so they don't break easily (i've heard) too. Lots of other treatments, but if the toes are going i'd haul in the big guns! Look at the surrounding scales on the one that the old ones brushed off on, see if there's still signs of possible infestation. New scales will be layed down, but if the other ones fell off simply because of damage they might not be gone still; look VERY carefully to see if they are new from healing or just because of the deepness of the damage.

Scaly Leg Mite - Keep Hens Raise Chickens

Their are new scales started. They look very clean and healthy. Like I said, I smotherd the crap out her feet also, so, not only anti bio goop, but smothered anti bio goop.

I still feel bad. Its so hard to see on the feathered feet! Like, when MR. Fluffers got the scaly leg, his leg feathers fell off, Beulahs haven't. You wouldn't know how bad it was. I knew that she had them though, I mentioned it before, and treated her and a few other, then treated them ALL for mites period. Cleared out the straw. So, I was totally take by surprise when the toe fell off. BUT like I said, I looked at the other ones, and since Florus doesn't have scaly leg, but he too is missing those 2 outside toes... It does lead me to believe it was frost bite. That bothers me the most. I can deal with leg mite... I guess I can deal with the frost bite too, but, it does bother me. I can only contribute it to them sleeping in the run. BUT you'd think with them not getting a draft, them not having a heat lamp on them, they'd not get it. You'd think the ones in the coop who did have a heat lamp would be more like to get the frost bite, since EVERYONE says don't heat the coop in the winter, moisture and more likely to have frost bite... blah blah blah... WELL, here are 2 birds who had no heat, slept in a draft free run, and they've lost toes to frost bite.

Anyway. All the chicks are doing marvelous. 3 of the new mamas already have the chicks out and about, the only one who doesn't is Sheh-Sheh. AND she is sharing a coop with Criptoe, separated by chicken wire, and would you believe how violent they are to each other through that chicken wire? I had to rig in a peice of cardboard so they couldn't see each other! OMG! If they could have gotten to each other! WOW! LOL. This is the first time I have seen mama hens try and kill each other! I have 3 mothers in the garage right now, and they are getting on just fine. 2 mothers in the outside are getting on fine, but Sheh-Sheh, I think I may need to move her to the broody coop, put up a bit of enclosure and make her her own pen there till she's not so vicious over her new babies. LOL. First time mom! LOL

today was a continuation of cleaning the run floor under the roost area from the faverolles. They are going to be extremely pthed off at me later. I took down the roost in their pen. They are going to have to use their coop instead. Anyway, I was cleaning the ground under their roost. I took out an 18 gallon tote of poop and straw. Yuck. BUT what do I expect right? Thats where theyve been roosting for the last several months. SO, while I was in their pen, I decided to look for a new roost board for their coop from off the top of their coop. I store things up there... including cardboard peices I use to block off wind...

Yup... one egg was cracked, the other two looked good. I fed them to the faverolles... The cracked one I chucked into the woods.

AND How many heads can you see peeping out? Can you find 4 beaks that don't include the mamas?

I have a roo that will not go in the coop. Not sure if he can't get up the ramp or if he is scared to go in there, or what... but BF made him a little "dog house" to go in and he hides in there. I still try to pick him up and throw him in the coop when it is too cold.

My Goober is like that, too. With him, it's just plain obstinance. I gave up tossing him in the coop months ago. He does okay, though. We know that he goes in the goat house at night and snuggles with them.

Did anyone else think that today just dragged on and on? I swear I was getting nowhere fast today at work. Seemed to take forever. Had to stop for a car wash afterwards. I don't remember going through any huge puddles, but my car was so dirty you wouldn't have known it's actual color was silver. Even the door handles were dirt brown. At least it can be clean now for a few days before I go down those roads again.

Oh! We bought a new (well, used, but new to us) car. Gets about 40mpg which is going to come in handy with the gas prices. Don't know if I mentioned it, but my Buick has suffered a debilitating rust issue. Somewhere in the last 2 months a piece of metal came off and now the unibody is rusting out. We were told by 2 different mechanics we might get one more year before it becomes a safety hazard so we needed to get a new car. Now we can drive the new one with the better gas mileage and the Buick can sit there and only be used on the route until it busts. This would make the second Buick I have driven into the ground. LOL Drive 'em til you bury 'em. LOL

Hannah, read your story. I think you are quite talented in your writing. Needs a bit of editing to clear up redundancies, clarifying, removing unnecessary verbiage. It seems to be more of a general overview/backstory of what is to come... kinda like it's catching everyone up to speed very quickly to bring us all to the same page, if you understand what I mean. If this is your intent, then I think you did a phenomenal job. Going to cross post this comment.

Is this why you've been so focused on your wolf drawing?
