Fuzzy's Farm

Nova, you know I work for the post office and I can tell you 100% that your package should not have been handled that way. At my p.o. any live chicks or shipped eggs travel in the front of the incoming mail truck with the driver and then when we get them we have a safe place for any live chicks (we call whoever they are going to immediately) and we specially handle shipped eggs. I have delivered eggs on the route before and they ride with me right next to my seat carefully put in so they don't move. That said, whoever delivered your package should have been more careful and I would think they would have noticed the damage before delivering. Was there any sticker on the box indicating it arrived at the p.o. damaged? Is there a scan label? If so, go to usps.com and enter the label code to see if the carrier scanned it as having noticeable damage. Most importantly, though, I would take the box to your p.o. and show them or call and speak to the supervisor and file a complaint. What happened to your eggs is totally unacceptable and you have every right to voice your opinion on the delivery of them.

Oh no, my mail lady is wonderful. I don't think this is her doing. To much of the yolk and whites were dried up and super sticky. This is definitely a handling problem with in the hub.

I did talk to Ed. He said he put the hole in the box. He was wondering about air exchange, and thinking maybe it might be better if the eggs were able to breathe. That being said... The walls of this styrfoam container are at least 3 inches thick. He packaged them the exact same as the first package. The first package arrived fine. Only 2 eggs were cracked, those cracks weren't even noticeable until candling. These eggs in this package, they were like.. crushed in the newspaper wrappings. I don't even understand how they could have been crushed like they were. And we are talking 4 dozen eggs all together, and having been very carefully wrapped in the paper, the paper wrapped thickly, so as to cushion... ANYWAY, not my driver lady's fault. She's always handled all our packages with care. Even the easter baskets my mom sent last month came completely undamaged...

Just cross the fingers that the rest of the eggs weren't to scrambled...

Hi Everyone! We left to go to Alva to start my dad's estate probate on Saturday. We got back today and I found one of the buffy's dead. She was still was still warm but stiff. Looked like she had just gone to sleep. She was really healthy and our housesitter said she was fine this morning. That's 2 1 year old hens that have just dropped dead. I'm so upset cause they were both such great chickens. Plus it was a bummer of a trip going through my dad's stuff. Reading on here it seems like it's not unusual for chickens to just drop dead. Any ideas? Could I have a disease running through? I've not seen any symptoms of disease. Everyone is happy and seemed healthy...

Hi Gigi... Boy can I commiserate on the "sorting" of parental belongings. I still have things in the closet from my dad that I have just put off... He lived with me, so, it wasn't a lot of stuff... just a room.. that was packed full...

Anyway, about your hen.. how was she laying? I'd say open her up and look... but it's probably too late now... If you have another one do that, I'd open her up and look. ESPECIALLY if they are all related.

My wyandottexfav hen did that to me a few days ago. I think though, that she may have gotten into the antifreeze that spilled. I don't know. BUT there has been a lot of fighting on the roosts at night lately too, now that the chicks have gotten to the point of not being under moms, and wanting to roost up in the summer area with everyone else. ANYWAY, I found her on the ground with her head at an odd angle against her chest. She was a pretty thing too. BUT I think she may have broke her neck in the fall. She was one fat bird though, and laid daily. She was an offspring of one of the first golden I had, one that didn't have a repro problem, but died from heat stroke last summer. Anyway...

I also have two other sickies right now. Skatter and Soledad are both puffed, and having black poos. I KNOW they got into the antifreeze when it blew. I ran for the hose to get it washed away, and had to hose them to get them away, and had to keep chasing them off. I hope they pull through... I don't know what to do, other than keep giving them poultry drench, probiotics... Crossing fingers. I am thinking they may end up locked up with their own water and food and sulmet for diarhea... Fuzzy, you got any thoughts on this one? They are eating and drinking.

And Tee, congratulations on all the hatched babies.
Why, thank you! But I'm going to take that early as mine haven't hatched yet. LOL
I believe the kudos for recently hatched babies goes to Nova, the hatching extraordinaire.

Sorry about your hen. Sometimes, it just happens without any reason for it.

Ooops, sorry Nova. I was reading through messages so quickly I got stuff turned around. Not unusual.

I probably should have opened her up but I was fried from three days doing probate stuff and just couldn't handle it. I'll miss her though. She sat on my lap for about 10 minutes before we left. That should have clued me in as she usually isn't that patient. I did change their feed but don't think that would have done it. Her head was at an odd angle also. I'm keeping an eye on everyone else.

I'm sorry about your girl. I hope you don't lose any more. Antifreeze is bad stuff for animals.

Yeah, I'm sure you know about "stuff" from your dad. I didn't bring that much home except lots of his tools. It stilled filled our CRV. And paperwork. The paperwork is a killer.

Fuzzy, congrats on the trailer. I bet you'll have it fixed up in no time.

How are all your chickens, Savannah?

Hi everyone! Gigi chickens are doing great couldn't resist and bought the last 4 black sex links from feed store yesterday. Figured I had 4 chicks and 3 ducklings I had to keep in brooder anyway why not add 4 more? Lol didn't realize how fast ducklings grow. Going to have to do some rearranging. Nova sorry you got some broken eggs, will company replace them? Hope so. Tee how's new pad coming along? Hope good.

Hi Savannah. I'm doing good, but I don't have a new pad. Fuzzy does, though.

Gotta say, I'm doing some awesome impersonations this week. LOL

LOL, I started a post, but then my touchpad died...

I got so much done today. I feel better about the coops now, wouldn't have a problem with someone visiting. I finally got the last of the flood mess cleaned up. Yes, still had wet spot that needed to be dried out, and the straw was stuck good, along with food... Food does create cement. Food, mud, and straw. Not sure how long it'd hold up in a rain storm... but it is pretty **** hard to get off the ground. BUT I managed. Even got the lawn mowed, the garage cleaned out, the brooder fixed up for the chicks, and now the garage chickens are p-o-ed at me for taking it away from them. BUT they've got their roosts and nest boxes, so it's better for them now anyway.

I gave the chicks a bowl of dirt. OMG, they were bathing in the food! Was so funny. Anyway, I put them in the garage brooder, and they were stunned at all the space. Immediately freaked out. Showed a few where the food and water was, put in a fire pit bbq rack for them to learn to roost on, and then stood back and watched the antics begin. They were in HEAVEN with all the extra space. A 2x4 brooder over a 1x2 rabbit/guinea pig cage. LOL. ANYWAY, they don't seem to be cold, they've got their light. My concern was that they wouldn't be warm enough, but they are not piled on top of each other. I have another red light to use in case they aren't warm enough. Will check them again in a while, now that the temps are dropping outside. Supposed to be a low of 50 here.

Well, about the eggs, no, no replacement. They were a generous gift, and we will make the best of what's left and be very happy with them. It's not Ed's fault. He packed them the exact same as the first time. I have to candle them tonight to see what's good still to set. Cross finger that most are good. There are a bunch of polish in this batch, and red shoulder yokohamas...
