galvanized waterers

Homestead, that hanging thing is really cool. I like it.
Out of all the waterers I have, I have a small animal one (looks kinda like one of those office water coolers with the clear container), and a dish at the bottom that sticks out only in front. I think I'll go get another 1 or 5 because that one is not a hassle at all.

i use the 3 gal. galvanized for my mobile pen and hanging it has helped but after 24 hours its nearly empty. I have 21 fryers that are 4 weeks old. not sure if its leaking or they are drinking it.

for my layers, I have a 5 gallon home depot bucket (2.99) and plastic water basin 3"x16" for a potted plant (4.99). I fill the bucket with water, put the basin over the top and then turn the whole thing upside down. water leaks out of two small 1/8th inch holes i drilled an inch from the bottom. this lasts for about a week and is a hell of a lot cheaper than those 50 dollar 5 gallon waterers.

it works so good, i purchased another set to go outside the coop.

Now i have to fashion a top to prevent them from perching on top and pooping in the water.

WooHoo, NewEgg that's a great idea and I already have that stuff laying around. How high do you put the holes?

Re: Galvanized. There's a nub that you turn the top around till you lock it in. I took the top and stood it on top of the nub instead of locking the tub to the base. I think it works. Anyone else want to try it too?

I was under the impression that you aren't supposed to use ACV in a metal/galvanized waterer, so assumed I would be shopping for a plastic one. (Which I am now, since my little girls are headed out to their coop this week, finally.) Definitely want to do the ACV thing; has anyone else read that it is incompatible with metal? A friend of mine gives her hens a bucket of water in the morning, and one in the evening, and leaves it at that. Do not know how high the sides of this bucket are, or how she keeps them from perching on the sides and pooping into the water. I am planning to go the hanging waterer route, and noted that another BYC person said to get a big one that is then heavy, and harder for them to swing/hit/spill. Not sure how well that works when it's time to refill it, though - heavy to lug and hoist!
Clearly, I am still undecided about this water issue, and it's a big issue!
