I understand how it is when your friends and family are not interested in your chickens. When I start to tell my family about my chickens they just smile and roll their eyes. I know they don't really want to hear me talk about the chickens. Lucky for me that I have a granddaughter (10 years old) who loves chickens. Also, I have a grandson who is only 2 years old that goes to the coop with me. I let him give the chickens treats so they all run to him when he is there. My chickens are big to him, but he is not afraid of them. If they get in his way he just pushes them back.

I like your beautiful chicken. She is very pretty. Your rooster has big feet and is growing a comb already. How old is he now? They are sure getting big. You must be feeding them good stuff.

My chickens are always afraid of me when they are young. I notice that when my pullets start laying eggs they get a little friendlier. Maybe that is because I give them more treats then.

I am trying to get materials together enough to make my chicken coop bigger. I have 55 chickens now but only 6 have started laying. Some are still babies. My granddaughter wants us to breed pure breed chickens so she wants the new part of the coop to have breeding pens in it. Also, I need a storage place that the chickens cannot get to. They peck and scratch holes in the bags of feed and they get into their treats. Bad chickens.

Cant remember if I have posted in this thread yet or not but wanted to say how much I admired your perseverence and dedication throughout your difficult hatch! With all those power outages you should be really proud that you got some to hatch! It was soo sad to hear about POD. I am so very sorry for your loss. Dogs are driven by instinct and the qualities that make him a good guard dog also make him want to attack your chickens. Sigh

I don't know if its possible to teach him otherwise once he has killed one or not.

I think you are right about the one chick being a roo. That is a very large comb for his age and I can't believe he's trying to crow already! I always think it's hillarious when they first attempt a crow!

I liked your expression 'Holy crickets'! Yes that shows shocked. I like to say 'Holy buckets'!

And about people not wanting to hear about your chickens I think there are many many BYCers (myself included) that can identify with that! There aren't many people around me that have chickens which I always thought was odd because I live on a farmstead in the country. But I am hearing of more and more people starting to get them so hopefully soon I will have company and someone that wants to listen when I talk about my chickens!

yes that's bad to have that situation around, my mother said i'm crazy when i tried to hatch them, after they hatch, without i knowing, she take a look silently

but still she think i'm nuts

yes, they do get always full-filled feeder and water everyday. haven't give them any treat yet. he is now almost reach the 4th weeks old.

that's the point, i noticed almost *all* animal friendlier to us when we fed them, just like my dog, keep waving his tail when see me and i really know he don't like/love us but he love our bread and meat.

mine too, the girls and roos very *addicted* to me, especially when i bring treat.

ups, 55 chickens, with 6 layers i'm sure you won't lack of eggs supply forever, at least in worst condition 1 will still lay. great, pure breed, i'm keep wondering is that bad to have interbreed chicken? i'm keep wondering what will be the result when my arabic roo mate my village girl? or when my village roo mate my arabic girl? still curious about the result.

yeah, they're smart enough animal, they have many tricks to flee from me when i need to catch them but surely they never can resist the taste come out from fresh beverage and the worm-looks-liked noodle.

easy to catch when i'm *armed* with those goods.

. yes, i'm too proud to have 30% hatch of them. yes, i do agree, it's hard to make him respecting the other pet of mine, he keep chasing my duck, muscovy and chicken. that's why i always chained him to wall but he broke 3 chains in a month and that's really2 expensive good chain.

the only way to make him pull back peacefully with afraid is keep my angry face to him and in 3 seconds he will pull back or he will get a very2 horrible punishment, glad he learn not to mess with me when i show my angry face.

yes, he is now 4 weeks and i'm too afraid to have *flood of roos* since i just take a look inside brooder and find out that 6 from 8 chicks show a comb but still very small compared to this one. i wish to have 7 girls now since i know 1 is surely a roo and i'm too afraid if the remaining are also the roo

unfortunately,at here, whenever people around me hear about i'm talking about chicken, their stomach become hungry and they keep talking about k**, mc*, and other fastfood restaurant.

Mulia, I am so happy to hear you are ok, I have been thinking of you alot....my prayers are with the folks who lost so much in your country ....Was tickled to see photos of your chics, there lookin good

Mine are doing good ...going out today to rig up something so when time I can put them outside with a heat lamp, currently they are living in a play pen in my spare bedroom hehe....So sorry to hear about POD and chick, last summer I bought 6 chicks from Tractor Supply , had my (little) dog with me he was getting a rabies shot, I ran into the store for just a minute, he killed all but one chick, I was sick !!!!! cried for days....it was my fault ...but I know how it feels when it's your own pet that kills, now I am most careful !!! I have a funny story for you Mulia. I found someone who had free egg cartons. I am going to need lots of egg cartons for my 55 chickens when they get a little older so I said I would take them.

The funny part is that there are 1500 cartons. With each one holding 12 eggs it will take 18,000 eggs to fill them.

The lady told me it is a truck full of egg cartons. My DH is not going to be happy when I come home with this many egg cartons today. But, I cannot help laughing about it. It will be fun to watch DH when he sees them all.

I am going to have to find lots of people to share my egg cartons with. I do not have room to store a truck full of egg cartons.

Mulia I have met Tomato lady's husband, and as far as I could see I think he is just about speechless.

And Vicki made me help her. I just got 600 egg cartons out of the deal. I think that only two of my chickens are laying right now.

This is my story. Vicki will tell you a different one. P.S. we left some of the egg cartons for another lady that we haven't met yet.

We have very good husbands.

Hi Mulia!
My incubation process is going mostly smoothly, but I thought of you yesterday morning. Our power went out during the night. I don't know how long it was out or what effect it will have on my eggs. I didn't get mad or upset. I know I have it easy compared to you, so I will take what I get and see what happens. On Thursday my eggs will be 2/3 'cooked' (that's what my husband calls it). My own eggs are (were) doing VERY well (12 of 13) and of the shipped eggs I had 50% doing well. Then I added more shipped eggs

So now I will hatch some and then wait on the rest to hatch!

I'm sorry to hear that disaster relief aid is not being evenly applied to everyone who was affected. I'm sure that adds a lot of stress to an already bad situation.
